Musician and singer-songwriter 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕 was born on September 25, 1986 in 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒐, 𝑪𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒂. He began his musical career playing drums in bands such as 𝑯𝒂𝒚𝒅𝒖𝒌𝒆, 𝑯𝒊𝒓𝒆 and 𝑬𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆. The latter band was the opening act for 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 during the 𝑼𝑺 leg of their "𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒔 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓" in 2007. Shortly after, 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕 decided to leave 𝑬𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆 and found out that 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑯𝒆𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒕 had been fired from 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐, so he recorded a video of him playing drums and he sent it to 𝑹𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 to be considered when they start to look for a new drummer. After 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 saw this video, 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 traveled to 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏 to see how they connected with each other and then he joined the band officially in 2008.

His first concert with 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 was at the historic 𝑨𝒏𝒈𝒌𝒐𝒓 𝑾𝒂𝒕 temple in 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒊𝒂 on December 7, 2008. With them he recorded the albums "𝑩𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒏" (2008), "𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝑳𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆" (2013), as well as the "𝑩𝟑 𝑬𝑷" (2012). After nearly eight years in the band, 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕 decided to leave 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 in February 2015 to focus on his side band 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒔. 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's official statement said that ”𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆”, and that 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 and 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍 wanted to thank 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 for all his work with the band.

In early 2016, due to difficulties related to his 𝑼𝑲 visa, 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕 had to return to the 𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔 and the band 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒔 was unable to continue. Nevertheless, 2020 was a special year for 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 as in August he married 𝑻𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒂𝒏𝒚 and a few weeks later 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 received the most beautiful birthday present as their first child, 𝑵𝒐𝒂𝒉, was born exactly that day. He also founded his record label "𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒃 𝑹𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒔" with which he plans to support emerging bands and artists as well as release his own solo albums. Just a couple of months ago he announced on his social networks that he will release a new album in autumn of this year.

𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔, next Monday will be a special day because it will be 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑯𝒆𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒕's 50𝒕𝒉 𝒃𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒅𝒂𝒚, so today I want to share with you the very first interview I read from 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 published in a Mexican magazine oriented to young people, very popular between the late 80's and early 00's. When I read this interview, I didn't know 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆's voice yet, I had only seen a couple of pictures and videos of the band and listened to "𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔" album. After reading his answers, it seemed to me that 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 was a very nice, funny and cool guy, and that hasn't changed until today. What has changed, is my admiration and affection for him, because now it's bigger. ✨💖🥁💕🎶

With the last album "Without you I'm Nothing" we did a 14-month tour and we were so busy that we couldn't write anything. When we finished, we were really tired, but we had to get to work because we were already tired of playing the songs on that album, and since we had been like monkeys playing, playing and playing, we already wanted to change the rhythm of work, and this we were only going to achieve it by writing new songs; we were excited about it.

I've been playing for 15 years, and from '89 to '91 I was in a techno band called K Klass. Besides, I've always liked electronic music; I'm from Manchester and there's a good movement of this kind of music there. Apart, I experienced the ecstasy of electronic music, so it's not strange that someone like me likes that genre so much.

About two years ago in New York we were playing a Christmas show with Kid Rock, and when we finished, Fred Durst suddenly stepped on stage and said Placebo sucked, so a big fight started. He's a poor idiot; We never cleared things up afterwards, so we were never friends again, and we weren't friends anyway. Four months later we met at a show in Australia, but since everyone already knew about the fight, the organizers planned everything so that we did not coincide, so nothing happened. But he's a real jerk; He and his band can go to hell.

𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗗, 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗛𝗔𝗗 𝗔 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗗𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗗 𝗕𝗢𝗪𝗜𝗘...
That's right, we met him when he was on tour with Morrisey, and one day, all of a sudden Morrisey disappeared. Bowie had some demos of us, so he wanted us to open some shows for him and that's when it all started. I think Bowie saw something of him in Brian in terms of lyrics. The thing is that we kept getting along, and when we released the last album, He proposed us to play together. Of course we said yes; When people like him want to do something with you, you know you're doing something right.

𝗗𝗢 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗗𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗘 𝗔 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗡?
Of course I do!, it was when I was 11 and I was in school. A couple of friends wanted to form a band and they talked to me. They had older brothers who were in other bands, so they lent us their guitars, but there were only two. My brother also had his band, but he didn't lend me his guitar and anyway they told me "why don't you try the drums?" I tried it and learned to play on my own. That's when I realized I wanted to be a musician, and here I am
(laughs).

𝗦𝗨𝗣𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗥𝗘-𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗔𝗟𝗕𝗨𝗠, 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗜𝗧?
Nothing, because that's what was going on at the time; That was our mentality and that's how we thought we should sound, that's why records should stay as they are, because they reflect an exact moment you are going through.

𝗟𝗘𝗧'𝗦 𝗦𝗨𝗣𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨'𝗥𝗘 𝗔 𝗝𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗔𝗦𝗞 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗩𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗧 𝗔 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡, 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗔𝗦𝗞 𝗛𝗜𝗠?
What drugs do you take? Who do you sleep with? (laughs) I'd be a gossip journalist, of course! And if I had to answer I'd say "f*ck you." I'd love to ask those things just to see the reaction.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗜𝗧 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗦?
I really enjoyed the experience, I made a lot of friends and it was a pleasure to work with someone like Todd Haynes (director). Of course, I'd rather be a musician than an actor because it's less tiring. When you act you have to wait for a lot of things to happen, as a musician you just do them and that's it, plus it's very tiring. From there I began to get along with Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) who was the producer, but after "Velvet Goldmine" I retired precisely because I was so tired (laughs), but it's a good movie. What I did hate is that people started to label us as a glam band after that. They don't understand that it's cinema, it's fiction, we were playing a glam band, but suddenly the reporters told us "how does it feel to be a glam band? Got damn! Anyway, the experience was wonderful.

𝗜𝗙 𝗔 𝗠𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗙𝗜𝗟𝗠𝗘𝗗, 𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗖𝗛 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥 𝗪𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗘 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗬?
(laughs) I think it would be Nicolas Cage (laughs) because you can always see that he brings out the funny side of everything when he acts; That's why I like him so much, I'm like that. He's also very intense, just like me. That's a good question, I think I'm going to remember it when I go to sleep (laughs).

I like things like "Being John Malkovich". I'm not one of those who enjoy horror movies or very gory stuff; I lean towards tapes like "Drugstore Cowboy", "Buffalo 66", "Rumble Fish", "Angel heart", that kind of thing….

Steve Forrest talks about Placebo

STEVE FORREST: FROM BRIGHTON TO L.A.

To tie-in with our weekly guest blogger Xarah Xavier’s ongoing series of blogs focusing on her move from Brighton to the bright lights of L.A. Beauty and Ruin was lucky enough to interview her husband and ex-Placebo drummer Steve Forrest. Here’s Steve on his career so far and his hopes and dreams for him and Xarah:

It’s safe to say you’re probably best known for your work as a drummer for Placebo. What was your previous musical background?

Music for me began at a very early age. By the time I was 8 years old, I was already obsessed with the drums, and listening to all of my parent’s music and the drummers in those bands was all very exciting for me. Only thing is, we couldn’t afford a drum kit. Money was scarce in those days, and my parents were struggling to even keep on the lights at times, so spending $500-$1,000 on a drum kit for your kid wasn’t really the most practical thing for them to do. However, one day when I was 11, my father took me out to help him sell off a dirt bike we had. After which, he drove me straight to the music shop and bought me my very first drum kit! It wasn’t much, just a little Yamaha stackable travel kit, but it did the trick! Eventually I would move on to own all sorts of different drum kits over the years, and play with many bands as well. (My first band was a Nirvana tribute act when I was 13… haha)

How did you begin your career with Placebo?

My career with Placebo started with my career in Evaline. Evaline was a group consisting of myself, and four of my mates out of Turlock CA. We started in my garage in the summer of 2001, and from there went on to sign a record contract with Maverick records, soon to sell us to Warner Bros. records. At this time, we were doing a number of festival runs and support slots. One of the bands we supported was Placebo, and we bonded with the guys instantly. A few months later, me and Evaline parted ways, and whilst out on tour with my friends “We Are The Fury” (now Jeremy & The Harlequins), my mother calls me up and tells me Placebo was without drummer. So next thing I knew I was on the phone with Brian Molko chatting about musical influences, the band, life, love, etc.. We really had a strong bond straight out the gate me and Brian; I always felt really close to him, especially in those early days… Anyways, four months later on January 12th, 2008 at 21 years of age, I landed in London, and for 7 great years I would see, hear, taste, smell, and experience those most amazing things this world had to offer.

So you left placebo to pursue your own personal musical ambitions, was that a hard decision to make?

Extremely hard decision to make. I loved that band and still do… It’s a hard one to talk about because you never really know what you can and cannot say about a person or a situation, but what I can say is that my time with Placebo was amazing. I loved every member of our awesome crew, I loved the hard working cats in our management, and most of all I truly loved my bandmates. Miscommunication, and egos got in the way of a lot in the end, and when that happens, it’s very hard to keep it going. We had taken our personal journey as far as it could go, and as hard as it was for me to go, I feel it was the best move in the long run for not only myself, but for my brothers as well.

At what age did you learn to pay the drums?

I was 9 or 10 when I received my very first drum. It was just a snare drum with an old pair of marching sticks. I used to throw a towel over the drum so as to dampen the sound and play along to the radio. I was immediately hooked. steve

So you’re currently living in LA, are you excited for your wife Xarah Xavier to be joining you?

Very much so, yes. This past year in Brighton has been the toughest year that I can possibly remember having. For both myself and Xa, life has been seemingly cruel, and calloused towards us in many ways. But in a funny way, I believe it all to be what was necessary for me and her to change our lives so drastically! Sitting here now from my bedroom in my mate Brady Leffler’s East Hollywood flat, I’m reminiscing about all that’s taken place, and all that is about to take place, and I’m excited. Me and Xarah have many plans out here, and it feels so good to be working and creating again. Most of all though, I do miss my teammate. She’s my best friend, and it’s very hard to function properly without her. She’s my rock, and even though it’s only a week and a half until I get to see her again, it feels like an eternity! Haha but that’s how these things go I guess.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

On tour somewhere, sun on my face, cold beer in my hand. Would love to have a kid by then too. I know it’s probably not very rock and roll of me, but I like the idea of having a little one kicking about. Kids are the best, and both me and Xarah think we’d make pretty cool parents. In the meantime, I’m gonna keep making records, and doing what I love. I ADORE performing, and will do anything I can to make sure that I do it for as long as my body allows me…
