Robert Palmer was born on 19 January 1949 in England. He spent his childhood on the island of Malta where his father, an officer in the Royal Navy, was based. He listened to Lena Horne, Nat "King" Cole and Billie Holiday on the American Armed Forces Radio. He moved to London in 1969 and spent a few years experimenting with bands such as Dada'and Vinegar Joe. When Vinegar Joe broke up, he left for the United States. He recorded his first album He migrates to New York and experiments with new music. He incorporated some reggae sounds on ๐‘ƒ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ ๐ท๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘ (1975), and ๐‘†๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘’ ๐‘ƒ๐‘’๐‘œ๐‘๐‘™๐‘’ ๐ถ๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐ท๐‘œ ๐‘Šโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘ฆ ๐ฟ๐‘–๐‘˜๐‘’ (1976). His first real success came with the album ๐ท๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘๐‘™๐‘’ ๐น๐‘ข๐‘› (1978), followed by several albums that also received critical acclaim. In the 80's, Robert Palmer changed his musical style once again by incorporating synthesizers. ๐‘†๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘’ ๐บ๐‘ข๐‘ฆ๐‘  ๐ป๐‘Ž๐‘ฃ๐‘’ ๐ด๐‘™๐‘™ ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ฟ๐‘ข๐‘๐‘˜ confirmed his popularity with the public. He chose to focus on jazz on his 1992 album ๐‘…๐‘–๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘›' ๐ป๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž, a record of jazz standards immortalised by Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, among others. The public did not seem to like this new experimentation. However, they remained faithful and each album release was appreciated. Robert Palmer died on September 26, 2003, at the age of 54 years old in Paris, after the release of his last album ๐ท๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ฃ๐‘’. Despite variations in style, Robert Palmer still maintains a Blues and Rhythm & Blues vein.

Originaly, this song was released as a single in 1980. ๐‘‡๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘ ๐‘’ ๐ผ๐‘› ๐‘€๐‘’๐‘› was Palmer's twelfth single and the first single from the album ๐ถ๐‘™๐‘ข๐‘’๐‘ , released the same year. However, it was in Europe that the song did best in the charts, reaching the top 10 in some countries, including France, where the single was a huge commercial success in terms of sales - it was certified gold - and was later used as the theme for Renault advertisements.

๐Ÿ”ธ Virgin Radio puiblished a post in 2021 to remind Placebo's cover and to inform their version was used in the new Renault commercial.

๐Ÿ”ธDear Soulmates, today, i'd like to talk a bit about the 80's and Placebo.

Placebo is a band who grew up in the 80's and keep saying they are children of the 80's.

" So when we cover songs, we have a tendency to go back to the 80s and cover songs which got us interested in pop music. That's why you've got Johnny and Mary by Robert Palmer, that's why you've got Daddy Cool by Boney M -- or Running up that hill, for that matter. These are songs which remind us of our childhood and make us feel nostalgic, which is why we try to do something modern with them.”

This decade was heterogeneous where pop music, disco, rock, punk, synth pop went along coast to coast. A large part of their covers are songs from the 80's as they grew up during that decade. Let's go back to Placebo world through these songs. ๐Ÿ”ธ

๐Ÿ”ธWe can say Placebo are not influenced by the 80's music sonically speaking because even the covers have this particular and recognisable Placebo sound. They like these songs at a personal level. But it can't be denied what attracted them too was the artists who got their very own personal touch (Talk Talk, Kate Bush). and their own strong personality. Although Placebo did not cover any of Serge Gainsbourg's songs from the 1980s, he was (and remains) an important figure in the media landscape during that period. Gainsbourg's strong personality was not lost on Brian.

๐Ÿ’ฌ"I grew up listening to his songs. Along with ๐ต๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘™, he remains my favourite singer. I love the artist and the man. ๐บ๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘” is quite a figure. When I was a kid, I saw him on Drucker's show saying to Whitney Houston: "I want to fuck you". He burned money on television. In his own way, ๐บ๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘” was a real punk! "

A political act Gainsbourg did in order to denounce high taxes, which is still today in every mind here.

The 80's songs Placebo decided to cover are more than just danceable tunes, they all deal with strong, deep and true emotions, which lead to internal questionings about ourselves or about the world we live in through the lyrics or the videos. A significant and valuable topic for the band. It may be a way for them to beat this nostalgic feeling when they listen to them ? ๐Ÿ”ธ

I'd like to share Nik Kershaw's cover because it was the one I was the most happily surprised when I first heard it because I've always loved it since my childhood ๐Ÿ’•
