“๐‰๐„๐’๐”๐’' ๐’๐Ž๐” was released as vinyl single on August 19th 2016, so today we celebrate its sixth ♦️๐€๐๐๐ˆ๐•๐„๐‘๐’๐€๐‘๐˜♦️. The song was Placebo's first sign of life after the album ”Loud like love” in September 2013, which marked a drastic change in their musical style. So everyone wondered what the new single would sound like.

The song was written by Brian, Stefan, Steve Forrest and Bill Lloyd. It was recorded at RAK Studios in London and produced and mixed by Adam Noble. Fiona Brice was responsible for the string arrangement.
The cover of the single features Brian's son Cody wearing an oxygen mask. On the b-side of “Jesus' son“ you can find the Talk Talk cover “Life's what you make it“. The original was released as single in 1985, it peaked at no. 16 in the UK Singles Chart and reached the Top 20 in numerous other countries. Brian described both tracks on Placebo's new record as ”possibly two of the most commercial that we’ve ever done” (see quotes below).

Apart from the limited 7" vinyl “Jesus' son“ was also released on the EP “Life's what you make it“ and the compilation album “A place for us to dream“, both released on October 7th 2016. The album title is borrowed from a line in the lyrics of “Narcoleptic“, a song from the band's 2000 album “Black market music“.

The music clip for “Jesus' son“ was shot at Scivu beach in Sardinia. ”I saw a video of a little festival that is called Duna Jam. Bands that played in Sardinia on this wonderful beach, and I said: that’s the place for my song”, Brian explained why he chose this special region.

Duna Jam is a private festival held in Sardinia, Italy and active since 2006. Because of the unorthodox nature of the festival the audience is limited to 150 and more of a party than a proper festival. The event spans roughly an entire week with bands performing throughout that time period. Duna Jam is held on various parts of the island and much of the details are kept in secrecy, adding to the mysterious and inclusive nature of Duna Jam. Almost all of the live performances are held outside. As most events worldwide the festival was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to covid but this year in July it finally took place again.

Music video commissioner John Moule brought Placebo into contact with Joe Connor and Brian entrusted Joe with the video direction. Connor: ”The guys were lovely, and on the shoot day they were nothing but wonderful professionals. I had a great day working with them.”
The music clip for “Jesus' son“ combines shots of the band dressed in white and performing barefooted at the beach alongside traditional Sardinian carnival figures wearing bovine masks and sheepskin clothing. Custos contos,

Sempes, semmos istados

Stand, stand to attention
The moment's passed you by
Now is the rest of your life
Dare, dare I to mention
Your laughter makes me cry
A speck of dust in my eye

And I am unafraid and blissful
Here I come
I am unashamed at getting nothing done
I'm a cavalcade that tumbles one by one
But I'm okay, just like Jesus' Son
Bone, bone of contention
I've lost the count of times
I've seen you fucking goodbye
So good, orderly direction
To pull you from the mire
Your universe on fire

And I am unafraid and blissful
Here I come
I am unashamed at getting nothing done
I'm a cavalcade that tumbles one by one
But I'm okay, just like Jesus' Son
And I am unafraid and blissful

The official music video for Placebo’s ๐‰๐„๐’๐”๐’’ ๐’๐Ž๐ released on August 19th, 2016, was shot under the blazing sun of ๐‘บ๐’‚๐’“๐’…๐’Š๐’๐’Š๐’‚, at the beautiful ๐‘บ๐’„๐’Š๐’—๐’– beach in the southwest of the island, in July 2016.
It was Brian’s idea to choose this special location: “One day I found out about this festival that took place in Sardinia called Duna Jam, and it was really really small, like a hundred and fifty people with on the beach and the bands with play on the beach. I saw the location on YouTube, the sceneries are just mind-blowing! And I thought, THAT’s the place that we should film the video for Jesus’ Son.”

The clip was directed by ๐‰๐Ž๐„ ๐‚๐Ž๐๐๐Ž๐‘. Music video commissioner John Moule brought Placebo into contact with him. By the way, John Moule has also been a commissioner for some other great Placebo videos: For What It's Worth (2009), Too Many Friends (2013), Exit Wounds (2014), Loud Like Love (2014).

๐‰๐จ๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ซ wrote the script based on the ancient traditions of Sardinia:
๐Ÿ“ข “On this project, I was sent the track with the note that the band wanted something 'otherworldly' and set in the island of Sardinia; as Brian is a fan of the landscapes. I wrote this idea of taking the wonderful culture of Sardinia and giving it an otherworldly twist, making it feel really, really special. I had a phone call with Brian and we decided on a feel and an approach based on the idea I'd written, so it was a bit of both on this job.
[…] This culture has been going for 3000 years; it's a wonderful tradition that is still alive and part of community life in the middle of Sardinia. I've always loved cultural traditions like this as it gives you a view into how people live, how a community congregates. I wanted to give Placebo and the fans something really different and it felt like the perfect emotional flavour to bring to the track.”

Making of the video

Besides the band playing with their feet in the sand all dressed in white the video features local traditional characters of
At the beginning of the video, the voice says in Sardinian: "Custos contos, no ana ora, no ana prinzipiu e mai d'ana aere fine. Sempes, semmos istados" which means "๐‘ป๐’‰๐’†๐’”๐’† ๐’”๐’•๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’†๐’” ๐’‰๐’‚๐’—๐’† ๐’๐’ ๐’•๐’Š๐’Ž๐’†, ๐’๐’ ๐’ƒ๐’†๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐’•๐’‰๐’†๐’š ๐’˜๐’Š๐’๐’ ๐’๐’†๐’—๐’†๐’“ ๐’†๐’๐’…. ๐‘พ๐’† ๐’‚๐’๐’˜๐’‚๐’š๐’” ๐’‰๐’‚๐’—๐’† ๐’ƒ๐’†๐’†๐’." The words are there to stress how far into the past centuries the mysterious tradition goes.

The horned creatures are called "๐‘ฉ๐’๐’†๐’”", meaning "bulls", which are part of the group "๐‘ฉ๐’๐’†๐’” ๐’† ๐‘ด๐’†๐’“๐’…๐’–๐’๐’†๐’”", the typical masks of the carnival of Ottana, a village in the province of Nuoro. The "๐‘ฉ๐’๐’†๐’” ๐’† ๐‘ด๐’†๐’“๐’…๐’–๐’๐’†๐’”" represent oxen and their masters.
The ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’†๐’” wearing wooden masks that look like an ox’s head carry a plenty of cowbells of various sizes weighing up to 40 kg across their chests. The ๐‘ด๐’†๐’“๐’…๐’–๐’๐’†๐’” - the shepherds, masters of the bulls - in their twisted, almost horrific expressional masks, carry herding sticks and whips to control their ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’†๐’”. “๐‘บ๐’– ๐‘ด๐’†๐’“๐’…๐’–๐’๐’†”, also known as “๐‘บ๐’– ๐‘ฎ๐’๐’ƒ๐’ƒ๐’†๐’…๐’…๐’–” (the hunchback) has to me made as ugly and deformed as possible to be scary even to the devil and thus remove the misfortunes of life.

There are some additional characters, like ๐‘บ๐’– ๐‘ท๐’๐’“๐’„๐’–, the wild boar, and ๐‘บ๐’‚ ๐‘ฐ๐’๐’๐’๐’›๐’‚๐’๐’‚, a dismal old woman, also hunchbacked, who goes around the streets of the town dressed in black. She is always busy spinning wool, and she threatens to cut the thread hanging from the distaff if she wouldn’t be offered a drink. The woolen thread represents the life of someone who’s in front of the character at the moment.

Screenshot from the video

At the end of the parade, during the Carnival, the ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’†๐’” are chased and flogged by the Merdules to finally start the fights. However, everything always ends well.
The scenes symbolize what life in a small town was in ancient times when having a yoke of oxen was almost everything, if not all that you owned and still meant being wealthy. The radical change in the way of life nowadays did not affect the tradition of the wooden masks of the "๐‘ฉ๐’๐’†๐’” ๐’† ๐‘ด๐’†๐’“๐’…๐’–๐’๐’†๐’”". Therefore, during the whole period of the carnival, the streets of the town are crossed by various groups of Merdules, both organized and spontaneous, who make heavy noise with their cowbells shaking them rhythmically throughout the day until evening.

Also, there are slightly similar masks from another village in ๐‘บ๐’‚๐’“๐’…๐’Š๐’๐’Š๐’‚, ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’Ž๐’๐’Š๐’‚๐’…๐’‚. They’re called ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’Ž๐’–๐’•๐’‰๐’๐’๐’†๐’” ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐‘ฐ๐’”๐’”๐’๐’‰๐’‚๐’…๐’๐’“๐’†๐’”: the black-masked Mamuthones symbolize the darkness, grunting and stomping as they burst into violent pseudo seizures; while the white-masked Issohadores are the light, leading the beasts from flame to flame.

The song was released as a single on this day, August 19th, in 2016 and was featured on Placebo's 2016 EP ๐‘ณ๐’Š๐’‡๐’†'๐’” ๐‘พ๐’‰๐’‚๐’• ๐’€๐’๐’– ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’Œ๐’† ๐‘ฐ๐’• as well as the band's compilation album ๐‘จ ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’† ๐’‡๐’๐’“ ๐‘ผ๐’” ๐’•๐’ ๐‘ซ๐’“๐’†๐’‚๐’Ž later that year, on October 7th, 2016.
The single was released on 7" vinyl, with Placebo's cover of Talk Talk's ๐‘ณ๐’Š๐’‡๐’†'๐’” ๐‘พ๐’‰๐’‚๐’• ๐’€๐’๐’– ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’Œ๐’† ๐‘ฐ๐’• as a double A-side.

A "double A-side" is a single where both sides are designated the A-side, with no designated B-side; that is, both sides are prospective hit songs and neither side will be promoted over the other.
The single's cover art features Brian Molko's son, ๐‘ช๐’๐’…๐’š, wearing an oxygen mask.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: “This is possibly like our most optimistic, life-affirming, positive, spiritual single ever. There isn’t a lot of darkness in this song, there’s a lot of light.”
And, at the same time…
๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: “Our last single ‘Jesus Son’ and the Talk Talk cover ‘Life Is What You Make It’ are possibly two of the most commercial tracks that we’ve ever done.”

๐‘จ๐’Ž๐’†๐’ called the song the best summer soundtrack.

We can find some great ๐‘๐„๐•๐ˆ๐„๐–๐’ of the single on PopMatters.
"Spirited and soaring, Placebo’s new single is an anthem for living life and doing it without fear. It’s an especially relevant message for a fearful world, an ode to letting go of worry. Orchestral swells juxtaposed with raw, heart-on-sleeve lyrics make for a song both lofty and grounded, big enough that it can’t help but be noticed and still universal in its message of hope. The feeling of freedom extends to the vivid imagery of the video: horses running, waves crashing, pagan warriors unfettered by modern society as they roam the streets of ancient Sardinian ruins. If you’re looking for a moment of spiritual comfort in a chaotic year, Placebo’s your band."

"There is no “placebo effect” in faking that this is a fun track. On a slightly heavier side of the indie rock spectrum, the instrumentals are strong with energy and impact, especially with some slamming drums. The guitars have a great high pitch which adds to the energy; not an electric high, but sort of that rainbow/bubblegum pop. Vocals fit great with the vibe, making them easy to follow and sing along too. For a band who has been around for 20 years, well… it is never too late to discover great jams."

Joe Connor takes a trip to Sardinia with the evergreen Placebo, and marks the band's 20th birthday with this uplifting rock workout radiating away-from-it-all summer vibes and, most importantly, acquainting us with the guys in the furry suits and the brilliant horned masks.
You can add this to a long list of estimable Placebo videos, but there's also something of Anton Corbijn's work with Depeche Mode in its cool mystery and use of locations.

"It was such a wonderful pleasure to help Placebo celebrate their 20th year in the industry by shooting this video with them. It was one of those special projects where the creative concept and the band really gelled. I wanted to make something arresting, energetic and bold for them, something that reintroduced them but in true placebo style; something that felt otherworldly, special and unseen.
"I won’t explain too much as I feel the joy of this video is in letting the images and the culture presented in this video wash over you but needless to say it was a wonderful shoot in Sardinia and I’ll be travelling back to document the characters depicted in the promo in further detail later in the year. I loved making this one.
"Massive shout out to the producer Dom at Shoot Sardinia and all his crew on the island that helped to craft such a lovely video and a wonderful experience. Major props."

Besides the band playing with their feet in the sand all dressed in white the video features traditional characters of Sardinian Carnival.
