Today we are going to dust off one of those 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 songs that don't get much attention but are worth listening to. I'm talking about 🎸"𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐒 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐘𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐍𝐘"🎸, a 𝒃-𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 included in the maxi CD2 of the single "𝑵𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒚 𝑩𝒐𝒚" released on January 20, 1997. 𝑹𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒕 𝑺𝒄𝒉𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒛𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒈 recorded the drums on this track, it was produced by 𝑩𝒓𝒂𝒅 𝑾𝒐𝒐𝒅 and engineered by 𝑬𝒅 𝑲𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒉𝒂𝒏.

"𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚" is also known as "𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈" because 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 used to introduce the song this way before playing it as you will hear it later, and the title refers to 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚, 𝑱𝒂𝒏𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚 or 𝑬𝒗𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚, a fictitious character in the novels and films of 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅.


📍 Created by the 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉 journalist, novelist and 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑶𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒓 𝑰𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚 is the secretary of 𝑴, who is 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅's boss and the head of the 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆. According to the film "𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑶𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝑳𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑻𝒘𝒊𝒄𝒆" (1967), she holds the rank of lieutenant in the 𝑹𝒐𝒚𝒂𝒍 𝑵𝒂𝒗𝒚. In both the 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅 novels and films, 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚 is in love with 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅, although she never expresses her feelings for him. She has a small part in the films, but she is always highlighted by the connection between her and 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅 (something that is virtually non-existent in 𝑰𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈's novels, but is much more apparent in the novels written by 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏 𝑮𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒓 and 𝑹𝒂𝒚𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝑩𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒐𝒏).


📖 In 𝑰𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈's first novel, "𝑪𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒐 𝑹𝒐𝒚𝒂𝒍𝒆", 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚's name was originally "𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔 '𝑷𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒚' 𝑷𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒂𝒗𝒂𝒍". The name "𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚" derives from an unfinished novel by 𝑷𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 called "𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒕𝒕". 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚 is believed to be based on two women who worked with 𝑰𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 in 𝑵𝒂𝒗𝒂𝒍 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 during 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝑾𝒂𝒓 𝑰𝑰. One of them was his secretary 𝑷𝒂𝒅𝒅𝒚 𝑩𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒕𝒕; she played a key role in an operation devised by 𝑰𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 to deceive 𝑮𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆. Some theories claim that 𝑰𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 may have been inspired by 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒉 spy 𝑽𝒆𝒓𝒂 𝑨𝒕𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒔 in the creation of the character of 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚.


🎬 Her first appearance was in the film "𝑫𝒓. 𝑵𝒐" (1962) and since then she has appeared in almost every 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅 film with the exception of "𝑪𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒐 𝑹𝒐𝒚𝒂𝒍𝒆" (2006) and "𝑸𝒖𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒎 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆" (2008). 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚 has been played by actresses 𝑳𝒐𝒊𝒔 𝑴𝒂𝒙𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍 (1962-85), 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑩𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒔 (1987-89), 𝑺𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒉𝒂 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅 (1995-2002) and most recently by 𝑵𝒂𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒆 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒔 (2012-) in the official films; while in the unofficial films "𝑪𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒐 𝑹𝒐𝒚𝒂𝒍𝒆" (1967) and "𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒂𝒚 𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑨𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏" (1983) by 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒃𝒂𝒓𝒂 𝑩𝒐𝒖𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒕 and 𝑷𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒍𝒂 𝑺𝒂𝒍𝒆𝒎 respectively.


⭐ Basically, "𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚" is a funny song where the band refers to the flirtation between 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅 and 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚, but it is also a mockery of the repetitive plot of these films ("𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘦 𝘐𝘴 𝘢 𝘨𝘶𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭") and the qualities to seduce women of 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅's character ("𝘖𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘴, 𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘨𝘶𝘯 𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘤𝘦").

Among other references to 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅 such as casinos and martini, his favorite drink, we also find in the lyrics two expressions of 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒉 slang: "𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘱 𝘩𝘪𝘴 (𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦'𝘴) 𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦" that means to prevent someone from behaving freely or naturally and "𝘱𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 (𝘶𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘦) 𝘥𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘴" is used to refer to someone's death in a light-hearted or humorous way.

🎵 About the music, I read an interesting comment from a fan who said that it seemed 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 had made their own version of "𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒆" composed by 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒚 𝑵𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏 and 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒚 because although it was not an exact copy, the melody of "𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒚" captured the spirit of the original theme of the movie but with 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's special touch. ✨

⭐𝟮𝟱𝗧𝗛 𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗥𝗬: 𝗡𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗬 𝗕𝗢𝗬⭐

"Nancy Boy", released on January 20th 1997, was the song that got a lot of people into Placebo. So today we celebrate the 𝟐𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐘 of the song which was the band's fourth single. It reached no. 4 in the UK Singles Chart and was their first major success.

The single edit is a re-recorded version and noticeably different from the one that was released on the debut album in June 1996. The album had originally charted at number 40 in the UK, but with the success of "Nancy Boy" it re-entered the charts in February 1997 at no. 5 and went gold in May.

The music clip for “Nancy Boy” was the first one that Placebo did with Howard Greenhalgh as video director. It features the band performing the track in a colourful room with flashing lights, while the images of the band members are distorted. Drummer Steve Hewitt is portrayed throughout with a blurred face because he was still contractually obligated to another band on a different label. In some scenes there are various strange objects. In one part of the video you can see a mans head and shoulders area stuck to a table with spikes coming from it, and in another one a man is lying on a bed as a strange-looking woman uses a defibrillator on him. The clip also includes a fist with legs and a bathtub full of legs (see quote below).

📢 ”People have really skewed ideas when they start to censor things, like for the video of 'Nancy Boy' we have all these people in a bath of milk and at one point there's this massive splash and you see this huge kind of like come-shot sort of fly across the screen into somebody's mouth. And the Americans didn't even notice that. What they wanted, they wanted somebody's plastic bum taken out, you know what I mean, it's like they seem to miss the whole point and I think that's one of the beauties of Placebo, you know, it's that we manage to get these things across without people seeing them, without people noticing them. ”

The single version of “Nancy Boy“ was produced by Phil Vinall and recorded at Marcadet Studios in Paris in November 1996. It was put out in two totally different versions. The first one included “Nancy Boy (Radio edit)”, “Slackerbitch”, “Bigmouth strikes again” and a remix of “Hug Bubble” which was done by Brad Wood, who was the producer of the album version of “Nancy Boy”. CD 2 consisted of “Nancy Boy (Sex remix)”, “Eyesight to the blind”, “Swallow (Designer and U-Sheen Remix)” and “Miss Moneypenny”. The version of the song that was released on Placebo's debut album was produced by Brad Wood and recorded in Dublin, Ireland.

📢 "It's a celebration and a slag of that kind of behaviour at the same time. It doesn't promote promiscuity but it doesn't judge it either. 📕 Placebo’s Brian Molko has established himself as one of the most significant figures in the world of music over the past 30 years. Defying musical, aesthetic, thematic and personal mores, he and Placebo partner in crime Stefan Olsdal showed that music did not have to be the boisterous and misogynistic place it was in the mid-late 1990s amongst all the Britpop and nu-metal.


Following in the footsteps of Lou Reed, David Bowie and perhaps even Leigh Bowery, Molko shaped Placebo into an outfit that helped to bring the discussion of sexuality, fluidity and politics into the mainstream and change pop culture for the better.


To put things into perspective, when the 1997 single ‘Nancy Boy’ went to number four in the UK Singles Charts, the band stuck out like a sore thumb, but a refreshing and necessary one, to say the least. Discussing what were then taboo themes, the band’s message contained considerable weight, particularly when you match it against what Oasis were doing at the time with tracks like ‘D’You Know What I Mean?’.


Taking off when Britpop was at it the tail end of its commercial zenith, ironically, this proved to be very fortuitous for Molko and Placebo. They became the de jure band for all the outsiders, the square pegs in round holes, an outfit that didn’t relate to the bucket hat-wearing, alpha male brashness of the bustling music industry of the time.

It wasn’t all about sexuality, though. Molko’s lyrics touch on a whole host of challenging topics such as death, violence, teenage angst, drug use and the modern fascination with money. They often provide a means of escaping from humanity’s increasingly grim reality. The latest single, for example, ‘Surrounded by Spies’, discusses surveillance culture and the environmental collapse that world leaders are ignoring, showing that Molko always has his finger on the pulse.


Like Lou Reed, Molko has never been afraid to get into the nitty-gritty. This is one of the key facets of his brilliance, he’s a realist, a cynic even, and this again has filled his music with a pulp that many of his contemporaries could only have dreamed of having. There’s a reason why we’re still talking about Molko and Co. today and why, in comparison, Britpop eventually committed suicide by becoming a ridiculous caricature of itself, as did the mid-2000s indie scene. Placebo has, to varying degrees of success, remained relevant.


Again like Reed, Molko’s lyrical style positions him as somewhat of a Gonzo journalist stuck right in the middle of society’s most critical debates, peeling back the curtain and revealing the truth. He’s a witness that provides lessons in how we can better ourselves by outlining our faults, much like Thomas Pynchon or Hunter S. Thompson. He’s also captivated us by instilling a thrill to all of his music, much like the stomach churn you get after popping a pill. It’s a little naughty, but one hell of a ride.


Musically, in the early days, his down-tuned guitar and Generation X attitude aligned him with Sonic Youth, Nirvana and even riot grrrl groups like Pussy Riot. It’s a shame Kurt Cobain didn’t live long enough to witness Placebo’s rise, as it is certain he would have been captivated. In many ways, they are Cobain’s subversive spiritual successors. Showing just how provocative they are, in 2013, the band teamed up with the literary master of satire, Bret Easton Ellis, to deliver the pertinent video for single ‘Loud Like Love’, and his narration on suburban secrets is another superb indication of Placebo’s artistic vision.

Another exemplary element of Molko’s artistry is that he has always tread his own path, staunch in his beliefs even if millions of dollars are offered to him. He once turned down the offer of a million euros to become a judge on the French version of The X Factor, saying “𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑠𝑛’𝑡 𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑦 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑙𝑑” that could have persuaded him, regardless of the fact he’s bi-lingual and speaks French fluently.


Molko is driven by artistry and dedication to what is right. That’s what makes him such a refreshing breath of ice-cool air. He’s not a careerist or a money grabber, he’s Brian Molko, and he’s true to his own convictions. Considering that we live in the age of cultural pastiche, where rip-offs reign supreme both economically and musically, Molko continues to lead by example. 📖

A lot of people got to know Placebo through the single “𝙉𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙮 𝘽𝙤𝙮” which was released 𝟮𝟰 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙜𝙤 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮, on January 20th 1997. The song was the fourth single from the band's self-titled debut album and their first major success, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼. 𝟰 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘁.

The single edit is a re-recorded version and noticeably different from the one that was released on the debut album in June 1996. The album had originally charted at number 40 in the UK, but with the success of "Nancy Boy" it re-entered the charts in February 1997 at no. 5 and went gold in May.

The single was 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹 and recorded at Marcadet Studios in Paris in November 1996. It was put out in two totally different versions. The first one included “Nancy Boy (Radio edit)”, “Slackerbitch”, “Bigmouth strikes again” and a remix of “Hug Bubble” which was done by Brad Wood, who was the producer of the album version of “Nancy Boy”. CD 2 consisted of “Nancy Boy (Sex remix)”, “Eyesight to the blind”, “Swallow (Designer and U-Sheen Remix)” and “Miss Moneypenny”.

The music clip for “Nancy Boy” was the first one that Placebo did with 𝗛𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿. It features the band performing the track in a colourful room with flashing lights, while the images of the band members are distorted. Drummer Steve Hewitt is portrayed throughout with a blurred face because he was still contractually obligated to another band on a different label. In some scenes there are various strange objects. In one part of the video you can see a mans head and shoulders area stuck to a table with spikes coming from it, and in another one a man is lying on a bed as a strange-looking woman uses a defibrillator on him. The clip also includes a fist with legs and a bathtub full of legs (see quote below).
