Today we celebrate the ♦️๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐๐๐ˆ๐•๐„๐‘๐’๐€๐‘๐˜♦️ of "๐—œ๐—ก๐—™๐—ฅ๐—”-๐—ฅ๐—˜๐——", the third single from Placebo's fifth studio album “Meds”. It was released on June 19th 2006 and peaked at number 42 in the UK Singles Chart.

But there is something about it that makes it special and distinguishes it from all other Placebo tracks, and this is the fact that it was written from its end to the start. Brian: “This is the first time I’ve ever written, lyrically, a song backwards. I wrote the last line first and worked my way back” (XFM, March 2006). He said that he didn't do it on purpose, but when he started writing the lyrics he only had the last line in mind. It was only when he finished the song that he recognised what it was all about (see quotes below).

The video was directed by Ed Holdsworth. It features businessmen apparently conspiring against the public. They observe a computer disk containing a graphic of a DNA molecule with a hazardous ligand. Meanwhile a group of ants interfere with their computer equipment. A character, identified as a corporate executive president, gives a press conference with the help of a computerized prompter, but the ants' interference causes the prompter to say "I lied to you. We are the enemy.", which the president reads.

Two different editions of the single were released. The first one includes the album version of the song, “Infra-Red (The Waltmann remix)” and a River and Tears mix of “Song to say goodbye”. The second one contains the video clip, an extended video version of “Song to say goodbye”, Behind the scenes footage and an interview from the “Infra-Red” video shoot and the “Song to say goodbye (River and Tears mix)”.

“Infra-Red” was produced by Dimitri Tikovoi and engineered by James Brown.
It was recorded and mixed ar RAK Studios in London and mastered at Metropolis Studios also located in London.

๐Ÿ“ข “I had no idea what the fuck 'Infra-Red' was about because it was the first song where I'd written the lyrics backwards. I started with the last line and worked my way to the first. I'd never done that before. So it wasn't until I got to the first line that I was able to take a step back and understand what it was about. It turned out to be about revenge but I never sat down and decided to write a song about revenge. I like operating on that level.“
(Suicide Girls, May 14th 2006)

๐Ÿ“ข "I think 'Infra-Red' is about that, when you get very drunk and you've got a bee in your bonnet about something, and this vengeful quality emerges. You start thinking about people who've done you wrong and wanting to set the record strait. And if you don't have access to the person who's wronged you in some way, anybody will do (he grins). I'm certainly not encouraging that, it's just an observation."
(Zero Magazine, March 2006)

๐Ÿ“ข "It's a song about revenge. Many tracks on the album are about alcohol and where it takes you when you drink to much. When you drink, you often feel very angry towards those who have manipulated you in your life. Then you develop this desire of revenge that 'Infra-Red' talks about. For this track, I've been very inspired vocally by Bob Dylan, the one from the debut. Sometimes, I imitate him (he starts to sing) "There's gonna beeeee an aaacciideeeent!" (Laughter). It may be our 2nd single.“
(Rock Mag, April 2006)

๐Ÿ“ข “It was one of the most ambiguous songs. But really… Because it’s the only song that I, since I started writing songs, wrote from back to forth. I started writing from the last lyric and then worked my way up to the first one. And I never used to do it that way. And when I got to its beginning, I actually could’ve continued writing it. And then I realized that that song is very much about revenge, about the wish to inflict revenge upon someone.“

One last thing before I
Shuffle off the planet,
I will be the one to make you crawl,
So I came down to wish you
An unhappy birthday,
Someone call the ambulance,
There's gonna be an accident

I'm coming up on infrared,
There is no running that can hide you,
'Cause I can see in the dark,
I'm coming up on infrared,
Forget your running,
I will find you

One more thing before we start the final face-off,
I will be the one to watch you fall,
So I came down to crash and burn
Your beggar's banquet,
Someone call the ambulance,
There's gonna be an accident

I'm coming up on infrared,
There is no running that can hide you,
'Cause I can see in the dark,
I'm coming up on infrared,
Forget your running,
I will find you

I will find you...

(And the dark is running after you
That's right the dark is running after you
The dark is after you)

Someone call the ambulance,
There's gonna be an accident

I'm coming up on infrared,
There is no running that can hide you,
'Cause I can see in the dark,
I'm coming up on infrared,
Forget your running,
I will find you,
'Cause I can see in the dark,
I'm coming up on infrared,
There is no running that can hide you,
'Cause I can see in the dark,
I'm coming up on infrared,
Forget your running,
I will find you

I'll find you
I'll find you
