🔸 As part of a show dedicated to Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited, Canal+ invited Placebo in March 2006 to perform Ballad Of Melody Nelson on their show 𝑳𝒂 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒆.

🔸 After the performance, you will discover a 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 𝒐𝒇 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏, made by Emma De Caunes, that I translated for you 😉

◾ 𝙀𝙢𝙢𝙖: I was wondering, especially in relation to Monsieur Serge, when you were a young teenager in Luxembourg, how did you discover Gainsbourg ?
🔹 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: My favourite period was the Melody Nelson period, Cabbage-Head Man. It was when he started to be inspired by American and English music and the Beatles and things like that. And that it became a little bit more rock.

◾ 𝙀𝙢𝙢𝙖: And that's why you chose that song that you sing on the Gainsbourg revisited album and tonight with us ?
🔹 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: Well it's particularly because of the Melody album and really it's an album that was very important to me at one point in my life, that I listened to on repeat every day and I was obsessed with it, so it was natural for me to do the Ballade de Melody.

◾ 𝙀𝙢𝙢𝙖: On the album Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited you also put your voice on Requiem For A Jerk.
🔹 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: Requiem Pour Un Con yeah.

◾ 𝙀𝙢𝙢𝙖: I think you stole that one.
🔹 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: Well, I did it without being asked and then I sent it. I was given the instrumental and I recorded it and I sent it to Mr Kosten from Faultline and said "Come on, use me !

◾ 𝙀𝙢𝙢𝙖: So you're a lot on this album Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited.
🔹 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: What's interesting about Requiem pour un con, Requiem for a jerk, is that I did a duet with Françoise Hardy without ever meeting her. That's modern times, that's technology, modern technology and I think that's really cool.

🔸 La Musicale was a music television show presented by Emma De Caunes. The show premiered on 3 December 2004 on Canal+. It has hosted artists such as Amy Winehouse, Iggy Pop, Alicia Keys, Tom Jones, Seal, Robbie Williams, Muse, Texas, The Strokes for performances and duets.

🔸 For this special edition, Jane Birkin, Grand Corps Malade, Miossec, The Rakes, The Kills, Dionysos or even Carla Bruni were gathered to pay a tribute to Serge Gainsbourg.

🔸 The original song was released in 1971 on the album Histoire De Melody Nelson. The narrator tells the story of his love for Melody. The protagonist falls in love with Melody, a 'lovely tomboy' who does not know what love is. The Ballad of Melody Nelson shows her fragility but also her youthful energy which becomes necessary for her lover.
