📢 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧: First of all hi Cristina, nice to talk to you as well. Yeah, this album Never Let Me Go, Placebo's album number eight we started it just before the pandemic after a very long tour that Placebo had, it was the 20th anniversary tour and we also did a couple of tours of MTV Unplugged and Loud Like Love, the previous album, album number seven, so it was time to make a new album because it's important for us to have new music to go on, it's like our gasoline. We wanted to start, backwards. This time instead of doing the cover and the titles, the last thing in the process we started with this first, we started with the cover and a couple of song titles and album titles as well, and so it was a little bit of a backwards process.

📢 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧: Well, the process started out different than all the previous albums because there were only two of us in the studio, me and Brian, the singer. We started without a drummer and we wanted to make an album without drums and just do it with a drum machine and that has influenced the process a little bit. I think the process is where the songs come out, the sounds come out and kind of the mood of the record. And just having those beginnings a little bit different from the previous records, the result is very different from all the last records. I don't know, but it was important to incite to make the journey a little bit different. For example, being just the two of us in the studio, we had a lot of time to explore and try a lot of new keyboards. There are a lot of synths, a lot more synths on this record than before and that's quite noticeable on the first single Beautiful James, which starts with a synth melody. So it's like little touches that I think you notice that it's a new side of Placebo.

📢 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧: I don't know, there are longer songs on the album and I think it sounds more like a single, doesn't it? And it sounds like a good song to come back, to come back to the world (laughs), because it's been a while since Placebo has released something new, but I think there are longer songs that have more layers and have more evolution. And I think one thing that's new for us is that we've explored a little bit with the sound of silence. For example, at the beginning of our career, there is like an energy in the songs that seems that we can't wait to get to the end, we wanted to get to the end as soon as possible and now I think that after 25 years, we are exploring the silence a little bit. We don't always have to make noise all the time. And yes, I believe that just being the two of us have had more freedom to explore how we feel now in our lives, with our music and with all the history of our songs that we have.

📢 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧: Wow, yeah, that's unbelievable. I think like 60 years ago or so, a laptop or a computer was the size of a whole room and it couldn't do a percentage of what a cell phone can do now. So it is amazing the technological revolution we are living in now. It is happening so fast that I don't believe we are seeing the results or if we are seeing a little bit or what is happening, but it is such a powerful thing in our lives. On the one hand, I appreciate it because it is a very interesting time in history, isn't it? And there are many very good things, for example, like in music you can do things with a laptop now that you couldn't do three or four years ago, you know, so it gives us enormous possibilities and freedom, but as a weapon it is also very powerful.
And what you are saying is that things are already happening that maybe we don't see so clearly where we are going until it's too late, right? And that's a little bit what we want to explore in the song Surrounded by Spies as you said, which is a little bit of chaos and a little bit of losing control but still, I think what we have to do as musicians and as people, is try to surf what's going on without going crazy (laughs) and have a little bit of vigilance so that we don't get sucked into technology or what's going on and keep a little bit of humanity.

📢 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧: Good question... ehh, I can speak as a music fan and there are bands and musicians that saved my life too (laughs) and I'm still a music fan. I believe we don't think too much about it, we really don't think too much about what Placebo is. It's like our truth and I don't know if we can do it any other way and that has its good and bad sides. Sometimes we feel very vulnerable on stage or with people. For example, in a couple of countries I was threatened with death for what I think, for what I say, my opinions. So there's always a kind of fear, but I don't believe we can live in silence and our relationship with our music, we approach it with an emotional reaction, so if it gets to us emotionally, everything else follows and sometimes if what follows gets us in trouble well (laughs), so be it, because that's the way we are and we don't want to censor ourselves.
