๐ค๐๐ญ๐๐๐๐ง: Well, I'm glad that people still want to listen to our music (laughs) because you never know and we really appreciate it because it's also been a long time since the last album, almost ten years ago and well it's not like a comeback. It's like a continuation of our career, the path of our music and well, what can I say...? We had a very long tour of the last album and we had a break to land a little bit and get the desire to do something new again. And the process has been, well a bit different because we are only two of us in the studio now and it's the first time we've made a record without a drummer, for a long time, and so we did it mostly in my studio here in London and well so with a lot of gaps (laughs) they weren't planned gaps let's say, but I think the record follows very much the Placebo sound. What we tried to do was try to start with a slightly different angle, this time instead of doing the cover and the title and all that, the latter we did first, at the beginning. Brian showed me a picture that is now the cover and some song titles and the title of the album, and we worked from that point forward to have a kind of experience, a little bit different process.

๐ค๐๐ญ๐๐๐๐ง: Well, a lot of the music and inspiration comes from working and I think that being just the two of us gave us the freedom to experiment more. There are, for example, many more keyboards in this album than in all the previous ones. There are layers and layers of vintage keyboards or that come from the computer, for example. There is like a mix of the history of keyboards and that has excited us, to have so many electronic sounds mixed with the guitar and I think that is quite noticeable in the first single "Beautiful James" where the main melody is from a keyboard. And I think that was like a red line, let's say, to follow, to have that electronic component and use what the studio has, for example we spent days getting lost in guitar pedal sounds for example (laughs) So it was like experimenting and trying to discover new sounds and sometimes start a song instead of lyrics from a sound for example, or as I say, start with a theme or a title.

๐ค๐๐ญ๐๐๐๐ง: Maybe, we wanted to make a record without drums at the beginning, instead of a drummer having a drum machine, so there are traces of that on the record. There are several songs that have an electronic beat, but on top of that we have added acoustic drums as well. I don't know, I think sometimes the gaps we have been exploited by me on my side and Brian on his side - him with the lyrics and me with the arrangements - to explore more like silences, for example, or codas, pieces that come after the song. Those gaps in the recording gave us time to really lock ourselves into the songwriting and we haven't had that time before to explore.

๐ค๐๐ญ๐๐๐๐ง: Whoa! ehhh… I don't know, the only constant in life is change, right? And always in the background has been the world and everything that happens in the environmental world, in the political world, in the music world and in the world of our private lives, you know? That has always been in the background, so everything influences. Maybe at the beginning of our career we were in such a hurry to do things. You listened to the first album and it seems like we didn't have time to get to the end of the song. You know, it's like we had that energy of youth (laughs) and the most important thing was to get there as soon as possible (laughs). And now maybe it's like reflecting on things a little more maturely, right? That the world, our world is not just us, we have families and we are also more aware of what is going on outside of the studio. I think the themes of the lyrics in this album, for example, speak more about that than other albums and I think that maybe that's the difference, that we are more open to what is happening in the world.

๐ค๐๐ญ๐๐๐๐ง: Yes, I think the good thing is that they talk about many more topics now. Everything is like there in the front, isn't it? Everything is there, all the things are discussed much more than before in those topics that you have said I believe, but the only thing we have tried to do from the beginning is to have a relationship with our reality and with our truth and compose from a place as honest as possible and that is on the side of music, for example.
We have quite an emotional reaction to what we are creating, so if we feel it's okay, it's the sound that is Placebo and also with the lyrics it has always been an expression of our version of how we see humanity, the emotional side of the human being and that's the only thing we have done and just telling our truth, you know? And we are still doing it now. We are not the first ones to talk about those topics that you mentioned and we are not the last ones either, so it's like we are there, in the line (laughs) of rock bands that are doing their thing, and saying their message and their truth.
๐ค๐๐ญ๐๐๐๐ง: Well, the answer is quite easy, it's just that we don't know how to do it any other way (laughs). And yes, for example, I'm quite afraid now to go out again, to get out of that bubble but also to go out there on stage again and to release a new work, for that reason, because it is so personal and now we're going there, to be a little under the spotlight. But I don't know, it's like, it comes from our way of doing what we do and we don't know how to do it any other way and I think we couldn't do it any other way. So it comes with advantages and disadvantages (laughs). But it's like yin and yang, black and white, good and bad. It's always like in life. The mix is where the thing is, right?
