It's so nice to be here with you on this special day of New Year’s Eve. It’s been a tough year for everyone, and most of us can’t wait for it to end… However, let’s try to not be sad today but send our positive thoughts and hopes into the upcoming 2021. The Universe should hear us…๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’–
Even so we can’t have big New Year parties now, the theme of dressing up fits quite well for today. And I’m coming to make you smile, dear soulmates, and enjoy our beloved guys looking like they’re actually having a fancy dress party! Also, I want to remind you what Brian has to say about wearing make-up and playing with his androgynous look๐Ÿ˜

When I arrived in London, I let my hair grow again and I started being mistaken for a girl a lot of the time. And I’d worn make-up in theatre since I was 11, so I was kind of used to it. And I decided to play it up a bit. I just started making up to see if people’d be confused even more, and when the band came along I started putting more on. Nail polish is great if you play guitar because it looks really good on the fretboard as your fingers slide up and down.”

BM: "It's probably the most personal and forthright I've ever been in a song," he says. "I'm very proud of that song. I'm not proud of the story behind it, but I am proud of the lyrics and the vocal performance. It's the most naked I've ever been in a song."
๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ”ธ♦๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ”ธ

"๐‘ด๐’š ๐‘บ๐’˜๐’†๐’†๐’• ๐‘ท๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’„๐’†" is one of Placebo songs that reliably triggers a tearful valley to me ...
The reference to drugs and love has always been obvious to me, and every time I saw a performance of this song, I understood the depth of Brian's pain. And I've always been very interested in the background of this incredibly sad song.

"We wrote "My Sweet Prince" from an actual event, about one of my relationships that ended in a true tragedy.
A guy with whom the three of us were very close nearly died. It was really hard, we were rather confused by this. Because we had these very strong feellings in us, this song kind of came out of nowhere. Out of our guts. I have a strong link with this song. It refers to a relationship with a guy and a relation with a certain substance.
This two relations ended simultaneously in horrendous circonstances. He used to call me "My Sweet Prince". Lovers can sing it to each other. It's ironic, because it is about a the breakdown of a relationship.
It's one of the album's songs written from an ex-lover's standpoint speaking to me. When we were writting "My Sweet prince", a strange thought crossed my mind: this song was becoming really dark and tearing. In fact, it is about painful subjects like drugs and suicide. I assume, many people in different countries didn't really understand what it is about. But it doesn't matter to me if people don't grasp the meaning of it."

So was it a man or a woman?
Most likely, this is an error in the translation of a French article, the original of which, unfortunately, can no longer be traced. Because all the following mentions always talk about a girlfriend.

Brian: It is a love song really, you know, and it's... we don't write songs with radio play in mind, you know, that was a song that... there was quite a big tragedy in our lives that occurred while we were demoing this record before Christmas and it sort of had to come out. We just kind of vomited the song forward you know. And it's kind of a song about sort of two romances, a romance with a substance and a romance with a person and they both ended very, very tragically. Hence you know the very, very downbeat mood of the song. It's so, you know... the song, even the guitars sound druggy in that song, it's weird, and that wasn't really that purposeful, it just kind of came out that way.

Brian: It's more about the love affair with the individual really and you know, I don't really care. That's a very important song to me and it sort of... it puts in a box sort of like a very, very difficult moment of my life and you know essentially we write music for ourselves first and I find that one quite difficult to talk about.

I think it makes it easier to live with if you've done something positive and artistic with them you know and that you1ve kind of distanced yourself a little bit from these things. Because I did a little bit of studying drug addiction during my high school studies, it was interesting for me to reveal references to heroin in Brian's verses.
You know, his verses testify not only to his experience with this addiction, but especially to his incredible talent for putting this pain into the lyrics. This song is another masterpiece in a row...

In fairy tales, the prince always lands on the "White Horse", which is another nickname for heroin.
Although it is not directly mentioned in the song, many heroin addicts who felt addressed by this song formed this imaginary connection with the song.
Because heroin is at that moment for all these lost people

Finally, I would like to close this post with another Brian's quote, which was published in Rock One No. 4: November 2004:

Brian: "We wrote a song "๐‘ด๐’š ๐‘บ๐’˜๐’†๐’†๐’• ๐‘ท๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’„๐’†", it's about heroin and suicide. I met people who told me "I make love with my girlfriend listening to "My Sweet Prince".
And I tell them: "No! you didn't get the meaning!"
It's the worst song to make love. That's crazy. I'm often told that one makes love listening to Placebo.
I want to answer: "But you don't know what was happening in my life when I wrote these songs". That's really strange. But beauty lies in innocence too. People live their lives with your music, they live their own stories through it. And fortunatelly, there is more ambiguity and depth in our songs than in Oasis' ones for example (laughters)!"

“It is now time for 160 lucky Coca-Cola consumers to join thousands of people in Piazza del Popolo in Rome, to live the hair-raising experience of being part of "Coca-Cola live at MTV". The night will be hosted by popular MTV Italy personalities Paola Maugeri and Enrico Silvestrin, and will feature artists from the Italian and international music scene.
The line-up includes the band that is renowned for having introduced and developed Italian hip-hop - J Ax and DJ Jad better known as Articolo 31, and Marlene Kuntz, the leading band in the alternative rock scene in Italy. Frequently referred to be a glam version of Nirvana, Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal and Steve Hewitt, raised to fame as Placebo, will also participate.”

"This time they [people] will know, however, who exactly Placebo are, protagonists of the performance on the stage of Sanremo Festival in 2001 that literally terrified a hazy Raffaella Carrร . Catapulted then in front of an audience not suited to their style, Brian Molko's band left the stage as it did the rock stars of the past, with a completely smashed guitar. Something more pleasant, however, binds this gloomy and hedonistic band, capable to create impressive songs, to Rome, like the duet recorded with Asia Argento as a cover of "Je t'aime... moi non plus", the scandalous song by Serge Gainsbourg."

Not really, it feels like the album is quite experimental and quite eclectic. We decided that it was time to bring a lot of electronic and a bit of a hip-hop feeling to what we’re doing so we wanted of people kind of accept it and they have. We’re really trying to do something fresh but not turning our back to what makes us uniquely us as well which is difficult thing to do.

"Placebo. Exceptional. I was lucky enough to have a friend who won the tickets and I didn't miss a chance to see them live, since Rome is an hour's drive from my city. And I must say that all the waiting paid off totally, with a truly overwhelming live explosiveness. Opening was reserved for "Taste In Men", a song from a few years ago. During "The Bitter End", "This Picture", "Plasticine" and "Special K", performed at the top, everything happened. Great ballads "Special Needs" (exceptional live) and "Pure Morning", which was the closing song. Really very good, Brian is a character born to be on stage... just think that he changed guitar on every song!!! Absurd! Overall I give a nice 5 to this concert […] Ah... I forgot a detail: Brian of Placebo, after he finished Taste In Men came up with "Hello Rome, how the fuck are you???" ... ;)) Great!!!"

Dear friends, today we move together in memories to more distant times of the band Placebo and use an article published in the magazine nzherald.co.nz in June 2000.
Here, Brian talks about the first two albums and songs that are very close to my rock soul, as well as the experiences that shaped their career at the very beginning.

๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž๐›๐จ - ๐๐š๐ค๐ž๐ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐ง๐š๐ฌ๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐ž๐
"Desperate" is Brian Molko's one word to summarize his band's music. "Desperate, but also romantic," he adds, as he tries to encapsulate the edgy, nervous music and often intensely personal lyrics which stain Placebo's albums.
"The first record was quite enthusiastic, fresh record, full of lust, vigour and the energy of youth," says Molko, an American who makes music with a Swede (Stefan Olsdal on bass, guitar and keyboards) and a Briton (drummer Steve Hewitt).
"This time we're slightly more world-weary, broken-hearted and melancholic. It's more of a post-coital kind of record. A lot of the songs have to do with break-ups and loss."
Placebo is a band that wears its heart on its sleeve. The trio are open about sexuality and substance abuse, subjects featured in songs as well as several frank interviews with the band. More than most of the bands, Placebo takes the listener for a trip through their lives, which is sometimes a wild and frightening roller coaster.

The story behind the song is that Brian forgot to take his name out of the phonebook after the first Placebo album was realeased and there was a message on his answer machine with a sort of Steven Hawking voice. It's a quiet creepy song.

Aphex Twin.

Both texts are very similar, but not the same. During the song Evil Dildo, a male voice is heard from the answering machine with the words - Hey motherf*cker, I'm after you...
At the very end of the song is a very scary recording of an electronically distorted voice with this lyrics - I will f*ck you up the butt and I will sneak into your room and cut your cock off...
And stuff it in my mouth and chew it up with my little pearlies...
... even instead of the word butt, I would advocate the word "bunghole", from the original text of Aphex Twin, because the sound at that moment corresponds more to this word.
If you look above, the text of Aphex Twin is slightly different.

So how was it? Why is there a male voice in the song and an electronically distorted recording of the threat at the end? And why does it sound the same as a recording from a song released by another artist a year before, but still the lyrics are slightly different?
We will not solve this mystery, nor it is needed.
It's just one of the interesting things that should have been revealed and who knows, maybe one day the opportunity will come to ask Brian how it was ...
In any case, in my opinion, he dealt with these threats very well. Using them in such a song with such a name - guys, for me it's a masterpiece.

Brian gave the following one to Juice magazine in July 2010 when he was in Bangkok uring the “Battle for the sun” world tour. He talked about freedom, religion, sexuality and a lot of other things. Enjoy reading.

SO YOU'RE IN BANGKOG NOW. HAD ANYTHING INTERESTING FOR LUNCH?
“Uh…eggs.”

HOW'S THE TOUR GOING SO FAR?
“Come on, man, you know you can do better than that!”

SORRY, MUST BE THE MEDS. SOUTH EAST AFRICA IS KIND OF LIKE THE FINAL FRONTIER FOR WESTERN ROCK AND INDIE BANDS. DO YOU FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT MALAYSIA?
“Is it? Well, I don’t know. I guess because there is so much political bullsh!t. I think people really want music here in South East Asia. And I think that a lot of bands don’t want to invest in South East Asia, or Asia in general. When I say invest, I mean touching people’s hearts and not worrying about the money you’re going to make. It’s about worrying about the future that you have with these people and building a relationship. We played in Cambodia, Thailand, Japan and Singapore and it’s very much about communicating freedom with these people. When we played in China, we started a riot and it was very, very strange. The security was the army and the people in the audience were fighting with the army. They were trying to get over the barrier to get onstage with us and we were like, “Oh my god.” You know, we’re a bunch of faggots and we’re wearing make up in China and these people really connect with what we we’re doing. But for us it was very powerful, and it’s very difficult in today’s world where you have people like Simon Cowell who have manufactured pop music. Pop music for me in the old days use to be a cool thing, but now pop music is a really bad thing. People are disrespecting pop music because they make an industry out of it. It’s amazing that you can go to somewhere like China and actually feel part of some anti-authoritarian vibe and that was very much what pushed Placebo forward in the early days. Placebo, of course, is different now. I’m 37 but when I was 23 I was pissed off at the world and I wanted to f*ck society, and it was very important for us to be rebellious. Now we’ve spent 15 years in the music business and it’s a different thing. We understand society and how we can use society for a better future, and this is very much what we’re about. It’s not about rebellion anymore; it’s about working with people who have the power.”

WOW, YOU GUYS CAUSED A RIOT IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIK. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT MALAYSIA BEING A MORALLY UPTIGHT COUNTRY WHERE PERFORMERS ARE SUBJECTED TO STRICT RULES?
“Right now, I’m in Bangkok. But for the past 3 weeks I’ve been at Koh Lanto, which is a Muslim island. I spent a long time every day communicating, being with Muslim people, and I don’t see a major problem between us. We all can get along. We really can as long as America is taken out of the situation. The focus behind America is about what we don’t understand, and basically fear and politics is based on what we don’t understand. I would like to encourage people to try and study other cultures because it’s very important. It’s amazing what you can learn from other cultures. I’ve spent the past 20 years travelling the world and I feel so blessed.”

WE HEAR YOU. TRAVELLING EXPANDS THE MIND IN MANY WAYS.
“Absolutely! People who work in the bank or for the government can’t travel like I have. I’m so grateful for that. I’m also grateful for meeting people who tell me what they believe. I can learn something from that. We’re all propelled from the same idea, which is happiness and understanding. It’s when institutions get involved, like the Catholic Church or the Vatican, for example. They make rules about what we’re supposed to believe. Well, let’s let all of that go and just communicate as people.”

WOULD YOU SAY THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HARDER FOR PLACEBO TO PLAY HERE IN THE PAST?
“I’ve heard this, but I don’t know. I think that in Malaysia there are people who want to hear our music, people who identify with us and what we are. If there is any message that we want to communicate to people, it’s freedom–freedom of choice, religion and sexuality. It’s very important for us, and so if these people want to get on the Placebo bus then they can. If there’s anything that we can do to contribute to the politics, then hopefully we are an important band. So many bands like Oasis don’t care about politics. But for me, being in a band is a political statement. And I’m obsessed with 60s music–The Grateful Dead, Janice Joplin and The Doors. All these bands, when I was a kid, were really important to me. They were all fighting against the establishment, and I think that music should continuously fight against the establishment. Of course Placebo has achieved so much and, to a certain degree, we have become the establishment. However, we can still fight against it and the restrictive ideas. What we believe in is absolute, complete freedom.”

WERE THERE ANY REASONS FOR NOT COMING TO MALAYSIA IN THE PAST AND WHY DID IT TAKE YOU SO LONG?
“Absolutely not. We are a band but we’re the type of band that, during the problems in Eastern Europe, went to Croatia [and] Kosovo. We played gigs and the people who showed up were nuns. It was really weird, but there were about 500 to 1000 people and there were about 100 nuns. And we lost a lot of money. This is really important: those people went through a revolution and no other band is prepared to come because no other band is prepared to lose money. And we went, “Yeah, well f*ck it! Let’s lose money and go there and play for the people.” It was amazing and when that happens, it’s really incredible because you will not believe the kind of people that show up. Nuns were rocking out! You know you’re in Eastern Europe when nuns are rocking out. And then you look at them and they go, “You know what? I really want to communicate with you.” And it’s a beautiful thing because these women are married to Jesus so… I don’t know. It’s something they understood; they understood what we were doing. And it all taps into this whole idea of freedom. If nuns in Croatia can come and see us play, and they can get excited, then hopefully religious talks are possible between all of us. Just because we believe in something doesn’t mean we have to kill each other. I really believe that. I come from a really religious background and I grew up from that. I have so much respect for any religion that isn’t my own. I think that we are all very similar and so much sh!t can be resolved just by talking to each other. What do you think?”

WE'RE OPEN PEOPLE. AT ONE POINT WE USED TO WORSHIP SAMUEL L. JACKSON. BUT WE GOT KIND OF JADED AFTER “SNAKES ON A PLANE”.
“I don’t like Western religion. I like Eastern religion very much.”

INTERESTING. ARE THERE ANY REASONS FOR THAT?
“I’m very attracted to Buddhism because it’s not about some bearded guy in the sky telling you what to do; it’s about you. And I think if we stopped to actually understand the effects that we have on the world, then we would make the world a better place. Unfortunately, as people we’re all very emotional and our culture is very important in terms of what we choose to believe. I think so many people have ghetto-ised religion and made it into something that is bad, but in fact it’s something that helps us all be better people and that’s what we want.”

SO WHAT WILL CAUSE THE DOWNFALL OF HUMANITY?
“Oh, that’s very easy: the environment. Have you ever been to the Maldives?”

NO, WE HAVEN'T.
“Well, I have and I’m very aware that in 50 years the island [where] I caressed little baby sharks will not be there anymore–because of rising sea levels. We as a species have completely used this planet as a garbage zone. People are so into the latest app that they can get on their tablet that they don’t give a sh!t about the world they live in.

WE KNOW; IT'S SAD. GOING BACK TO YOUR INFLUENCES, DO YOU ALSO CONSIDER DAVID BOWIE AS AN IMPORTANT FIGURE TO PLACEBO?
“Oh yes, very much. David Bowie was a very important person for us because before we had a record deal, Bowie heard our demos and decided that we were going to tour with him. At that point I was living in a house that was paid for by the government with a couple of other guys. And we were really poor, so poor that we had to scrape our money together and decide on what we were going to eat every day. And then one day the phone rang and it was like, “Hello, would you like to go on tour with David Bowie?” Before David Bowie we were playing to 300 people at small clubs in Camden, London. And all of a sudden it was like, would you like to play in front of 8000 people? He is somebody I have so much respect for.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE INDIE BANDS TODAY, ESPECIALLY BRITISH INDIE BANDS? ARE THEY A DIME A DOZEN?
“You know what? I’ve been asked this for like 10 years, and this is what I’ve always said. There is good music and there is sh!t music. In the 60s, there was good music and there was sh!t music. The only difference is that we only remember the good music. So there is the same amount of bands today who are sh!t and the same amount of bands who are really good. And that’s it. How old are you?”

OLD ENOUGH TO VOTE AND TO KNOW WHEN TO STOP DRINKING...
“I’m 37. I’m very old, but I look very young. Have you heard Grinderman?”

YEAH, NICK CAVE IS AWESOME!
“For me the guy is like 50 and he’s more rock ‘n’ roll than any f*cking 20 year old I know. “Honey bee, honey bee suck my d!ck, honey bee, honey bee suck my d!ck.” This is what we’re on about. We’re on about the primal stuff. This is why you’re interested in music. The primal stuff really agrees with you. Check this out…(slapping sound) That’s just me slapping my stomach.”

THAT SOUNDS VERY PRIMAL. CAN WE ASK YOU SOMETHING ABOUT DRUGS? AS A BAND THAT HAS GONE THROUGH THAT WHOLE ROCK 'N' ROLL LIFESTYLE IN THE PAST AND SURVIVED, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM IT?
“Let me make this very clear. We don’t do drugs anymore. It’s very important for us as a band to be drug-free and we believe that we can be better musicians, better personalities, better people if we’re drug-free. I’ve been to rehab twice. It was very difficult for me and I’ve learnt how to deal with life without drugs. When we made Battle For The Sun, we decided that we would make a record that was hopeful and we wanted to inspire people because we felt finally free from the addiction.”

WAS IT A LONG PERIOD OF TIME?
“About 10 years. When me and Stefan made this new record, we gave up everything–alcohol as well. We decided we were going to make a record that was inspiring for people. All we wanted to do was something that made people feel less alone. And that is really important because when I was a kid, I listened to music and felt less alone. I think the only thing that’s important to us as people is to make people like us as well. We want people in Malaysia to know they have a friend, that we can be a friend for them, that we understand what they are feeling. Do the people in Malaysia relate to the people who are in charge?”

WE CAN'T GERERALISE, BUT THERE ARE MANY FACTIONS HERE.
“There you go. I want to tell you something very important. My purpose is absolutely not to relate to these people. Because culturally, I have so much of a different thing with England and Ireland. However, if I can make an idea of freedom within these people, then I think it’s really good.”

WELL, WE COULD USE A REVOLUTION. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. IT'S BEEN AN ENLIGHTENING CONVERSATION.
“Likewise. See you soon.”

“๐—ฃ๐—œ๐—ก๐—ž ๐—ช๐—”๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ”, a collaboration between Brian and French band Indochine, was released 15 years ago on December 19th 2005. Three different versions of the song were recorded: ”Pink water 2” is the English interpretation sung by Brian and Nicola Sirkis of Indochine. The duet in French called ”Pink water 3”. Both songs were released on Indochine's ”Alice and June” limited edition, the French one also appears on the regular album. Finally also a single was produced but the band's record labels decided to put out a version without Brian as guest vocalist. Nicola Sirkis: ”[…] his own record company refused to let us release it with him.” I don't understand this decision, but I agree with Nicola who also said: ”What is important is that the song exists, it is historic, and it comes in different versions.”

In an interview with Rock Sound Brian explained how the song came into being: “Nicola wanted to write something in English. He called me and asked me to help correct his grammatical errors”. Sirkis made it more concrete: "In fact, I had started working on a text in French but on an English gibberish. I asked him to help me with that, because I wanted an English version of this song, but consequently he made me a full text and even added voice melodies” (Indofr, 2005).
Brian also agreed to be on hand when Indochine would record ”Pink water” so he could help the French artist with the phonetics. A few days before the meeting he called Sirkis and offered that he'd sing it as a duet wit him. Nicola about the session: ”We did the recording on a Sunday in a studio near his home, Brian came with a bottle of Chablis and we spent the afternoon together”. Sounds nice, doesn't it?

”It's quite interesting because his own record company refused to let us release it with him (it's the version with Nicola alone that was released as a single of Alice & June). I told him: "Look, you have written the lyrics, you could do what you want". Anyway, it proves that he likes the song and that, once again, his own record compagny is a big shit (laughs)! And nevermind, it doesn't matter, it's the business. What is important is that the song exists, it is historic, and it comes in different versions ...
I have seen him, he was in Paris in February, and the video was played, and he was disgusted that it was this version wich was released. On the other hand, I think that if he had really wanted to, he could have stressed and made his own record compagny give in. It is a bit strange, what happened with this song. I find it great, he found it great, we did it together, and so, the story ends there ...”

Sky, I’m gonna leave tonight
You know, I’ve got a life to live
And it’s getting late

So
I’m gonna leave tonight

I can’t decide
If I’m the one you need
Or what you want out of life
I always thought
You’d be the one to leave
The one to change your mind

I’m on a rocket
To a dying star
You have to stay behind
Can’t take you with me
‘cause it’s very far
And you don’t have the time

Get me out of this place
Get me out of this place
Get me out of this place

Before I met you
I was crushing cars
And I was doing fine

Get me out of this place
Get me out of this town
Before I drown in your deep
Pink water
I won’t remember your face
I can’t remember your frown
Because I’ll drown in your deep
Pink water

๐‘ซ๐’†๐’‚๐’“ ๐’”๐’๐’–๐’๐’Ž๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’”!
We’re used to see our favourite band performing in front of a huge excited crowd. But can you imagine Placebo playing for twenty people?.. And no, it wasn’t at the very beginning of their career when they’ve been completely unknown.
I’m gonna tell you about such a concert in Placebo history, of course, from the only point of view of experience (never a shame!) which probably every band have to go through to become massive.
The gig I’m talking about took place at
To tell the story, I picked up two excerpts of the ๐ˆ๐๐“๐„๐‘๐•๐ˆ๐„๐–๐’ where Brian, Stef and Steve shared their memories of that day. But first, I’d like to mention some facts about the venue because it was the one of a pretty interesting history.

๐‘ด๐’‚๐’Ž๐’‚ ๐‘ฒ๐’Š๐’'๐’”, also known as ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’Ž๐’‚ ๐‘ฒ๐’Š๐’ ๐‘ด๐’–๐’”๐’Š๐’„ ๐‘ฏ๐’‚๐’๐’, was a music club owned by American hard rock band ๐€๐ž๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ก, opened in December 1994 in their hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. The club was named after Aerosmith’s famous song "๐‘ด๐’‚๐’Ž๐’‚ ๐‘ฒ๐’Š๐’" which appeared on their 1973 self-titled debut album. The song was written by lead singer Steven Tyler. It was a live staple of Aerosmith concerts throughout the band's career and appeared on several live albums.
Later, the club was owned by House of Blues and renamed into Lansdowne Street Music Hall; closed in 1999.

๐Ÿ“ขNow, let’s start from sort of a diary of a short Placebo US tour back in 1998 published in Q magazine.

๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž ๐‡๐ž๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ (๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฌ): Up a 9.30am for our flight to Boston. Watch The Truman Show on the plane. There's a 50-year-old queen on the plane, worn by years of flying, called Jeff. He is always there for us when we need him. Americans always probe us, so we turn the tables. Jeff is a gentleman so we take him up on his offer to hear his life story.

Arriving in Boston we go straight to a motel for two hours sleep while the crew set up the gig. We are haunted by Jeffs. We then go to the venue and are on stage at 10pm US time. After three weeks in Europe our body clocks are pointing at 4am. The venue is as far removed as possible from anything we're used to. There are no lights and no dressing room. We decide to enjoy it anyway.

๐’๐ญ๐ž๐Ÿ๐š๐ง ๐Ž๐ฅ๐ฌ๐๐š๐ฅ (๐›๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ): We've jetted to the US to start a round of shows and promos to back up the release of Pure Morning. We weren't really meant to go over to the US until the New Year, but some of the most important radio stations have jumped on the track and we're plunged into the nightmare scenario of trying to "break America". Radio stations are all powerful and to be successful in the States you have to play their game. Tonight is the first time on this tour that we play to a crowd that only really knows one of our songs, such are the perils of a successful radio record. We also say hello to our haven for the next few days - our giant silver tour bus. Those bunks will never be so comfortable as they are tonight...

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐จ (๐ ๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ซ, ๐ฏ๐จ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ): The venue for tonight's gig - Mama Kin - is owned by Aerosmith but is a bit of a toilet. We have to play with Rancid, which we're not happy about. Everybody is a Rancid fan and so we end up playing in front of about 20 people, after having played in front of two thousand in Paris. We have serious jetlag and feel decidedly inhuman.

๐Ÿ“ขLater, in 2003, while touring the US again, Brian was asked about the concert at Mama Kin’s, in comparison to their recent shows in America, by Anais of Suicide Girls.

Anais: How do you find the US tours now vs. 1996, 1998 etc.? I mentioned to you that I was there in Boston, first gig off of the European...

Brian: At Mama Kin’s?

A: Yeah, twenty of us...

B: The Mama Kin’s culture shock. Yeah, yeah.

A: You did have a few devoted fans there but out of twenty it had to have been a culture shock.

B: Yeah, from three thousand people to twenty. It was a bit much. We weren’t really prepared for it at that point. We’d just done kind of the biggest tour in our lives which took us up to an eighteen-thousand-person gig in Paris, you know, which is really intense. We had been touring since March and so by the seventh month I started to really sort of buckle a little bit under the pressure. Really feel the weight of expectation. I was getting tired. So even though these were kind of like the biggest shows of our lives, with a massive crew and three big visual screens and lots of projection, it was very show biz. Towards the end of it I kind of, I lost a little bit of a connection with the audience and it was kind of bringing me down. Coming here, it’s been so refreshing. It’s been like learning the ropes again. It’s been a long while since we’ve done this kind of tour and I think it’s going to turn us into a better band. We’re finally getting energy again. We’re feeling such immediate energy. You can see the whites of the eyes of the people in the audience. You know, you stand on the barrier and they’re trying to unzip your fly, you know stuff like that, it’s much more punk rock. We’re really, really enjoying it. It’s fresh. It’s brought a real freshness back to Placebo. I’m having a great time. It’s taken a little bit of readjustment but we’ve thrown ourselves kind of head long into it and are going back in time and learning again. Learning what it feels like to do these kind of shows, learning from them. I think it’s one of the best things that’s ever happened.

A: Yeah, I do have the say the show other night, aside from Portland's lethargic audiences, that was one of the best shows I have seen of you.

B: Oh that’s cool. Yeah in? Portland the audience was amazing. Seattle was six hundred and five people, you know, and it just, it ranks in my top five gigs of all time. I had the most amazing time that night. I crowd surfed for the first time in years. It was electric.

A: Yeah Portland audiences can be snotty. I have a problem with that. There’s a cartoon slashed down the middle, LA and New York. It’s a guy in LA saying Hey how are you doing? and there’s a thought bubble above his head, Hey, Fuck you, and the New York side is Hey fuck you, and a thought bubble above his head Hey, how are you doing? That for me explains a lot of East Coast and West Coast. Well, my experiences with it.
