There’s a quite untypical story behind this curious animated video. It wasn’t commissioned to any director specifically but was sent to the band by a very devoted and motivated – and extremely creative! – Placebo fan.
However, the clip ended up on Placebo's YouTube channel as an official video.

🎤 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: He's from South Africa and he sent us this animation when it was almost finished. We thought that it was something new, unusual and that the guy really had balls. Moreover, this is not a computer animation, it’s made in a real old school manner with all these little dolls that he had to animate by hand! By hand! It's great, it's different, and he made us laugh… And then again, it was less work for us! (Laughs)

In the next excerpt, Brian, Stef and Steve Hewitt discuss the English Summer Rain video together while commenting on all of their videos from 1996-2004.

🎤  𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: This was the first time we ever used animation. In fact, this video was sent to us by a fan from South Africa, so it proves that initiative and persistence pays off. We find it amusing to look at ourselves as puppets. He was at college when he did this and would spend all of his time not doing homework and doing this animation instead.

🎤  𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟: Doing something useful (laugh).

🎤  𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: It’s kind of funny. It features Jesus on drums.

🎤  𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟: I’m gonna say he’s so stick up for detail.

🎤  𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: I’m not sure what’s going on but it looks like it’s Sunday afternoon, you know, after a very hard night out (laugh).

🎤  𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟: The singer from ‘Korn’.

🎤  𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞: ‘Jesus Korn’, funny.

🎤  𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: There’s a bit of a Rastafarian thing going on as well, I think. Featuring Johannesburg sky. Well, I don’t know if it’s Johannesburg sky, it’s South African sky anyway.

🎤  𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞: Fantastic job. I mean, movements of the puppets, everything’s fantastic.

🎤  𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟: This version’s the remix from the album by Dimitri Tikovoi. It features extra vocals in the end.

🎤  𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞: He’s got it all down, the right drums, the right cymbals. He’s even left-handed, amazing!

🎤  𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: Grégoire Pinard his name is. I’m playing guitar in this one, but there’s no guitar in this song. But he wasn’t able to know that, was he?

🎤  𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟: It’s a Fender 6.

🎤 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: Anyway it just kind of makes us giggle. It’s interesting to see ourselves in puppet form.
