๐ A young talent on the British hip-hop scene, Justin was only 20 years old when he released his first solo album, ๐๐บ ๐๐ช๐ฆ๐ญ๐ฅ ๐๐ณ๐ช๐ฑ ๐๐ฐ ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ต 9, in 1993.

๐ He quickly became known for his atypical, somewhat psychedelic style. In 1995, he radically changed his style with his second album ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ช๐ฏ ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ง๐ช๐ฆ๐ญ๐ฅ ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฏ๐ข๐ถ๐ต, with a rock and melodic sound.

๐ In 1997, Justin Warfield remixed ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ , entitled ๐๐ณ๐ถ๐ช๐ด๐ฆ ๐๐ณ๐ช๐ด๐ต๐ช๐ฏ๐ฆ (๐๐ฏ๐ฆ ๐๐ฏ๐ค๐ฉ ๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ค๐ฉ ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ช๐น), which can be found on the two CD EPs devoted to the re-recording of Placebo's oldest song.

๐ Being under contract to the same label, ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ฑ๐๐๐๐๐ met through this process. When ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ thought of finishing the chorus of the song ๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐จ๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐ during the recording of ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐, the idea of including a rap part was born. He felt that Justin would be the ideal person to do this. Brian invited Justin to the recording studio and Spite And Malice as we know it was born.

๐ฌ It was a song we had been working on for a long time and we didn't have a chorus. We couldn't get it right and we didn't want to force it. Brian suggested Justin Warfield. We've known him for five-six years. He's a real rapper, not one of those wankers like Puff Daddy. We sent him the song and let him rap. It was a panic, but it's a great experience for us. We want to stay spontaneous and not compose with ready-made formulas. That's the end of a band.

๐ฌ We had this track that had been around since WYIN, which was basically an eight minute jam, which we brought down to a four and a half minute song. The verses were there but we did not have a chorus and didnt really want to force anything out. So we said let's try a rap...Placebo and rap? Well, yeah! We had known Justin since we had been on the same label. He was in a band called One Inch Punch. Justin was introduced to Brian, a few years before and he just became a friend. He was the only other person, other than Chuck D., who we could think of, and I think Chuck D was busy. We called Justin and he was really up for it.

๐ฌ I'm not a rapper ! No competition with Eminem, no thanks ! I can't rap. We all try but just for fun, to mess around when we've had too much to drink ! In this song, there was a big hole, we had the music, the verse but not the big chorus we needed. We wondered what we were going to do. I can't force the words to come out, I like it when it comes naturally: "When it flows out". And the idea came to me: we've been listening to Public Enemy for ten years, "Come on! Let's do some rapping". And I know the guy to do it: Justin. Even Justin Warfield wears make-up sometimes: that's why we were introduced to him! He's one of the only rappers with make-up! We understand each other.

๐ฌ Because then it would become a "formula" ! We don't like "formula". I would be surprised to find hip hop on another Placebo album ! It won't happen ! It was a one shot.

๐ฌ We were introduced years ago because we were kindred spirits. When the idea came to use rap, Justin sprang to mind simply because of his approach. When he worked with Bomb the Bass on the song Bug Powder Dust, he was rapping about William Burroughs. On the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack he's rapping about Shakespeare. This is not a guy who raps about bitches and hos and getting people down on my D, which is not the kind of hip hop we're into. We're into Boogie Down Productions, KRS-One and Public Enemy, big time.
