Let's talk about "𝐇𝐮𝐠𝐳", the third song from the album of the moment. Of course, I mean "𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑳𝒆𝒕 𝑴𝒆 𝑮𝒐". I was very happy when this song started playing the first time I listened to the album because it has a little bit of that punky sound that 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 used to imprint on some tracks from their early albums and that I love so much. I really missed those kinds of songs and I thought they would never play something like that again, so hearing those loud guitars was a very nice surprise. 🎸🔥

Something that also caught my attention was the chorus "𝑰 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒂, 𝑰 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒔𝒐", which immediately made me think of "𝑲𝒐𝒐𝒍 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈", a song from the album "𝑮𝒐𝒐" (1990) by 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐's musical heroes, 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉. I'm not sure, but I think the chances of this being a direct reference to 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉 are very high because even in the article "𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝑴𝒚 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆" from 𝑲𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒆 published in June 2006, "𝑲𝒐𝒐𝒍 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈" was one of the songs 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 mentioned.

Back to "𝐇𝐮𝐠𝐳," here's what 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 revealed about the song:

🎤"Hugz for me fulfills part of the remit of what I wanted to do on this record, I wanted to talk about a kind of self-loathing which I've kind of touched on a lot in the past, but in terms of the sonics with Hugz, it very much reflects my reaction to what we've done before, our last tour, our last single, our last album, Hugz kind of epitomises the sort of the sonic brutality that I wanted to kind of inhabit on this record. And the initial inspiration comes from Doctor Who because it's a line that Peter Capaldi says, when he's hugging his companion, she wants a hug and so he gives her a hug, but he says it's just a way of hiding your face. And the first time I saw that episode of Doctor Who, I just went, OK, thank you, you know, there we go that's just perfect I'm going to make a song out of that. A hug is just another way of hiding your face. It's that kind of duality that that that's interesting for me, you know, an act which is meant to be intimate also, it's about hiding yourself."

On October 23, 2020, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 posted on their Instagram account a picture with the phrase "𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒌𝒂𝒚" and the caption of the photo just said "𝐇𝐔𝐆𝐙…", maybe they were recording the song because just a couple of days earlier, on October 21, they posted another picture with the caption "𝐕𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘…", who knows! The funny thing is that when that post was published we had no idea that "𝐇𝐮𝐠𝐳" would be the title of one of their new songs. Sadly, these posts were among all the ones 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 deleted from their Instagram account, 😢 but you can see the reposts we shared back then. 😉
