๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐ have just performed their adrenaline-charged power ballad "๐ฌ๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐, ๐ฌ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐" live on British TV. Diminutive front person ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐ - front "man" just doesn't work - wore lipstick and eyeliner and pounced about in a stretchy black tube skirt, the word "๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐" emblazoned across his tiny t-shirt. Fellow guitarist ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ถ๐๐๐ ๐๐ (the tall gay one) and drummer ๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐ (the burly straight one) just got on playing. Brittle with angst, the track imploded into a cacophony of noise the presumably left viewers reeling. Sales of the trio's second album, '๐พ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ฐ'๐ ๐ต๐๐๐๐๐๐', will no doubt continue to surge.

"๐พ๐'๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐'๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐," he sniggers, "๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐'๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐'๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐." Partial to a bit of Wildean wordplay, he adds that "๐ท๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐. ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐. ๐ฐ๐'๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐."
Nakedly confessional and sexually bewildering, ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐ have injected a much needed glam aesthetic into a jaded British rock scene. Their screen debut as Seventies band the ๐ญ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ in ๐ป๐๐ ๐ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐' ๐ฝ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ saw them in their element, (๐ด๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐๐ watched them on set and has a placebo sticker on his fridge as a result) but just don't label them glam rockers. Where the majority of today's easily classifiable bands continue to insist they defy categories, ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐ really do.
๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐'s affinity with the gender bending hedonism of ๐ฐ๐๐๐ and ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ is palpable (the band supported ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ on his European Tour and played at his 50th birthday party), but their influences are wide ranging. ๐ด๐๐๐๐ reels off ๐ท๐ฑ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐, the ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐, ๐ฑ๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, ๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐, the ๐ซ๐๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ and, er, ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐. Their fans, he says, "๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐, ๐๐ ๐๐-๐๐๐๐-๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐. ๐ฐ๐'๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐-๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐."
The spawning of ๐ด๐๐๐๐ lookalikes began in 1996, when ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐'s thundering single "๐ต๐๐๐๐ ๐ฉ๐๐" and eponymous debut album enjoyed surprise success. Now no gig would be complete without a gaggle of black bobbed androgynes hanging on to lyrics such as "๐ฐ'๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐/๐ฐ'๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐" and worshipping the multi-lingual, bisexual ๐ด๐๐๐๐ as some sort of mini god of identity crisis.
"๐ฐ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐," he pouts. The impeccably mannered ๐ถ๐๐๐ ๐๐ has an equally polite Japanese male stalker; ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐ gets women sneaking into his hall way at regular intervals.
While ๐ถ๐๐๐ ๐๐ and ๐ด๐๐๐๐ knew each other vaguely at school in Sweden (๐ถ๐๐๐ ๐๐ played basketball, ๐ด๐๐๐๐ was in the drama group), it wasn't until they moved to England and bumped into each other outside a London tube station that they decided to form a band. And though ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ฐ means "๐ฐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐" in Latin, their only criterion for their monicker was that it be a name they could imagine 40,000 people screaming. They enlisted ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐ through a friend at ๐ฎ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐'๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐ (where ๐ด๐๐๐๐ was studying drama), lost him briefly to the band ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ but wooed him back as a permanent member a couple of years ago. He happily takes the credit for ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐'s funkier sound.
Their rise and rise has coincided with a bout of stories highlighting a predilection for the more illicit things in life. Still if you're going to claim things such as, "๐พ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐," what do you expect? "๐พ๐ ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐," says ๐ถ๐๐๐ ๐๐ quietly.

๐ด๐๐๐๐ had been quoted in the ๐ด๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐ as calling ๐ช๐๐๐๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐๐, the host of tonight's chat show a "๐๐๐๐๐๐", and swearing that ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐ would never do his gig. ๐ฌ๐๐๐๐ returned the insult in kind. Nevertheless, they were eventually invited on, and accepted only on the condition that the wardrobe department found ๐ด๐๐๐๐ a t-shirt with "๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐" on it. "๐ป๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ฐ ๐๐๐-๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐," he snorts. "๐ฐ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ฐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐, '๐ฐ'๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ฐ ๐๐'". He smooths his glossy locks with a manicured hand. "๐ฐ๐ ๐๐๐๐." he adds thoughtfully, "๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐."

๐นAfter reading this interesting article published in ๐น๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ in 1999 and knowing the story of why ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐ wore this T-shirt - which is one of his most famous outfits - let's enjoy this very performance on the British program ๐ช๐ซ:๐ผ๐ฒ
(๐ช๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐: ๐ผ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐) recorded in 1999.
