🔸 In my post today, I'd like to get your opinion on how you perceive music whether you are musicians or not.
But first, let me explain the reasons for this question.

🔸 In 1986, in the French programme 𝐴𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑒𝑠 hosted by 𝐵𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑃𝑖𝑣𝑜𝑡, 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒆 𝑮𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒈 said that "𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘫𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯" whereas music is a minor art in the sense that an initiation to music is not necessary to create it, and therefore it is accessible to everyone whereas other disciplines require practice and initiation, such as painting, classical music, literature, poetry, architecture.
And when Bernard Pivot asked him if he considered the songs he composed to be part of minor art, he agreed.

🔸 The journalist 𝐽𝑜ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑎 𝑆𝑒𝑏𝑎𝑛, 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝐿𝑒𝑠 𝐼𝑛𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑢𝑝𝑡𝑖𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑠, knowing that 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 likes Serge Gainsbourg asked him what was his thought about Gainsbourg's view in 2006.

◾ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗾𝘂𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗴... 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝘁 ?
💬 I think there are two things: art and entertainment. The main function of entertainment is to make you forget your life, whereas the main function of art is to hold up a mirror to show you your existence and make you think. Both functions are equally honorable in the sense that everyone needs to escape, everyone needs Madonna. But you will always need something extra. And I like to think that we are part of those extra things. I want to believe that we are part of the art. On the other hand, for us, being in a band has always been about escape, about Peter Pan, about eternal youth. And then sometimes, to get people to think, you have to get them to dance first. That's why Public Enemy is probably the best band on earth.

🔸 It is interesting to see that their views are different. Serge's opinion is more centered on composing music, whereas Brian's is more focused on the ability to communicate emotions.

🔸 I've always thought that music is Art and never considered there was a minor or a major side in it. I think that music can be innate in some people and that for others it is necessary to take lessons. But also that music, in order to reach me, has to be able to touch me in the depths of my inner being, able to make me sad even when I am happy and to make me happy when I am sad. I relate more to Brian's point of view than Serge's.

⭐ I love wandering on the Internet according to my desires, my whims. By chance I came across the 𝐷𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑑 𝐵𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑒 website. I didn't know that a quote from 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛 was there.
Of course it's not unknown, and rather old judging by the use of the word "recent".

⭐ 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏... With the most recent interviews we read about 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑏𝑜, we now know the huge impact 𝐷𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑑 had on 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛. And even if 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛 thinks that at the time he didn't pay much attention to 𝐷𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑑's influence on him, it is certain that he was aware of the importance of the man 𝐷𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑑 was, given the memory that he had of him at the time.

⭐ The question is a pleasant one. That's why I wanted to ask you Soulmates, what is your most cherished memory ? Certainly, we didn't have the opportunity to sing with David Bowie ! 😄

⭐ Here's mine. 
📜 As for me, if it had to be about a famous person, my most memorable moment was when I was on holiday in Vallauris, a tourist town in the south of France, in summer 1998, where the local speciality is handmade pottery and ceramic.

📜 I was visiting the town when I suddenly came face to face with the statue of Beast, from 𝐽𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝐶𝑜𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑢's film 𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑢𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑡, at a street corner. And I had a moment of extreme doubt wondering what she was doing there ! This film was one of my first filmic loves as a child. I always admired and loved 𝐽𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑠 as well, the actor who played the Beast. I kept walking and saw a second one a few meters away from the first one. My surprise increased. I walked slowly forward and saw a large poster of 𝐽𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑠 in the front window. I stepped back a little and I saw the words “Jean Marais” written above the door, as shown in this picture.

📜 I rushed out the door to enter what was a small gallery dedicated to 𝐽𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑠 and his art. He painted, sculpted, drew, etc. I was in awe of every piece of art I saw. The 'Passe-Muraille' (a large statue of a man walking through the wall taken from an old French movie), sculptures of actors he had made films with in his career, or people he admired. And above all a bust of 𝐽𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝐶𝑜𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑢 (another artist I love ! 💗 ). It was so exceptionally unexpected !

📜 I was back in childhood, surrounded by faces, atypical objects seen in the films 𝐽𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑠 had played in. That entire surreal world that made me dream all my childhood was there, in front of me, around me. A return to the past. A 'pinch me' situation, like 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛 said, as I've always admired 𝐽𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑠, mainly his role as Beast (which is one of my favorite characters) and 𝐽𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝐶𝑜𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑢. The original sculpture head of the Beast was there. I stared at it for a long time, delighted and amazed 🤩

📜 Actually, this place was a small museum run by 𝐽𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑠 where he displayed his life's art. I had no idea that such a place existed, run by himself ! 😮

📜 I did not meet him, nor did I see him. I did not know that he had been suffering from cancer for some years. He died that same year, in November 1998. His museum was dismantled due to disputes with his successors a few years later. But it seems, at the latest news, that it will be reborn following donations :)
