🎁 Today we celebrate the 🎈𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲🎈 of the talented songwriter, musician, singer, record producer, DJ and founding member of 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆, 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒆.

📌 On July 23, 1961, 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏 𝑳𝒆𝒆 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒆 was born in 𝑫𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒉𝒂𝒎, 𝑬𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒙, 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅. He was raised by his stepfather 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒆 and his mother 𝑷𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒍𝒂, along with his half-sisters 𝑲𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏 and 𝑱𝒂𝒄𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆, who are younger than him. As an adult, he met his biological father who was an 𝑨𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏-𝑨𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝑮.𝑰. stationed in 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏. 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏 has described his upbringing as normal and stable. However, he also said that he was introverted and preferred to spend time reading alone rather than with his classmates.


In the 1970s, he taught himself to play the keyboard. He never received formal training. He just learned to play chart hits by deciphering the structures that were published in 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐 𝟒𝟓 magazine. He attended 𝑵𝒊𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒔 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒉𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑺𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍, 𝑩𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒐𝒏, where he was the guitarist in a local band called 𝑵𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒔. He shared a class with the recently deceased 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒚 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒓, 𝑨𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒚𝒆𝒕 and 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒚 𝑩𝒂𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆 (𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒖𝒓𝒆, 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝑨𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔𝒕 𝑹𝒖𝒊𝒏). 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏 became interested in electronic music upon hearing bands such as 𝑲𝒓𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒌, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒈𝒖𝒆 and 𝑶𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒆𝒖𝒗𝒓𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒂𝒓𝒌 (𝑶𝑴𝑫).

In 1980, 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒆 reunited with classmate 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒚 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒓 at the 𝑽𝒂𝒏 𝑮𝒐𝒈𝒉 club. 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒓 recruited 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒆 into his band 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 along with 𝑽𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆. Soon the band drafted 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝑮𝒂𝒉𝒂𝒏 to be the band's lead singer after hearing him sing "𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒆𝒔" by 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑩𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒆.

Thus 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆 was born, the name of the band was taken from the 𝑭𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒉 fashion magazine "𝑫𝒆́𝒑𝒆̂𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆" which translates as "𝑭𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑵𝒆𝒘𝒔" or "𝑭𝒂𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑼𝒑𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒆". Their debut album "𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒌 & 𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒍𝒍" (1981) included two tracks written by 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏: "𝑻𝒐𝒓𝒂! 𝑻𝒐𝒓𝒂! 𝑻𝒐𝒓𝒂!" and the instrumental "𝑩𝒊𝒈 𝑴𝒖𝒇𝒇". When 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆 announced his departure from "𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒆𝒔" in 1981, 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒆 became the principal songwriter for the band.


𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒆 lives in 𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂 𝑩𝒂𝒓𝒃𝒂𝒓𝒂, 𝑪𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒂 with his wife 𝑲𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒆 𝑲𝒂𝒔𝒌𝒊, whom he married in 2014. They have two daughters together and he has three more children from his first marriage. He also has a personal studio in 𝑺𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂 called 𝑬𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄 𝑳𝒂𝒅𝒚𝒃𝒐𝒚, equipped with a huge collection of synthesizers where he records his songs for 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆 and his solo projects.


🏆 On May 27, 1999, 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒆 received the "𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕" award from the 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝑨𝒄𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒔, 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 at the 𝟒𝟒𝒕𝒉 𝑰𝒗𝒐𝒓 𝑵𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒐 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔, he was given the 𝑴𝒐𝒐𝒈 𝑰𝒏𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅 "𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒃𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒐𝒑𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒓 𝒎𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄" in 2019, and became a 𝑹𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑹𝒐𝒍𝒍 𝑯𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝑭𝒂𝒎𝒆 member in late 2020 with fellow active 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆 members 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒘 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒓 and 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝑮𝒂𝒉𝒂𝒏, as well as past members 𝑽𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆 and 𝑨𝒍𝒂𝒏 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒓.

It is well known that 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 loves 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆's music and that it is one of the bands that has influenced them the most. 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍 in particular has declared himself a big fan of them on several occasions and has even stated that "𝑽𝒊𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓" is a key album in his life.

That's why in 1999 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 decided to record their cover version of "𝑰 𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒀𝒐𝒖", a song composed by our birthday guy 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒆, released as the first single from 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆's eighth album, "𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑭𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏" on February 15, 1993. It was produced by 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆 themselves and 𝑭𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒅 (who several years later mixed 7 of the 13 tracks on 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's "𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒔" album). 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝑮𝒂𝒉𝒂𝒏 said about this song:

𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 couldn't have chosen a better 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆 song to cover than "𝑰 𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒀𝒐𝒖", first of all because after the massive success 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆 achieved with the album "𝑽𝒊𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓" (1990), they wanted to show their rockiest side. They had the need to keep evolving, to keep trying new things in order not to get stuck in their characteristic electronic sound but at the same time without losing their essence. The best way to start this new chapter in their career and open their new album "𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑭𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏" was with a song as radical and powerful as "𝑰 𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒀𝒐𝒖".

Exactly! 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 also loves to mix such themes in his songs. But besides the fact that "𝑰 𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒀𝒐𝒖" could be talking about sex, love or the deep connection between two people, some suggest that it could be talking about drugs as well, which is another thing that several 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 songs have in common with 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒆. That's why I think this song totally resonates with 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's musical soul.


This 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 cover was first released on a fan-club-only cassette in 1999, later featured as a bonus track on the 𝑨𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏 and 𝑱𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒆 editions of the album "𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄" (2000).
