๐’๐’†๐’š ๐‘ซ๐’“๐’‚๐’Œ๐’†, (born June 19, 1948, Rangoon [now Yangon], Myanmar [Burma] - died November 25, 1974, Tanworth-in-Arden, England), is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist known for emotive vocals, sombre lyrics, and rich melodies. Drake never achieved widespread recognition when he was alive but inspired a cult following in the decades following his death.
▪️Drake was raised principally in the English village of Tanworth-in-Arden and played the saxophone and clarinet in school. He took up the guitar at age 16 and began writing songs two years later.

▪️Part of Drake's failure to attract a mass audience was attributable to his almost pathological reluctance to perform live. However, it was at a live show in Cambridge, that a member of Fairport Convention saw Drake perform, and recommended the singer to producer Joe Boyd. Boyd asked Drake for a tape, and was impressed enough to give the 20-year-old a contract in 1968.

▪️Drake's debut, ๐‘ญ๐’Š๐’—๐’† ๐‘ณ๐’†๐’‚๐’—๐’†๐’” ๐‘ณ๐’†๐’‡๐’• (1969), was the first in a series of three equally impressive albums. Drake created a vaguely mysterious, haunting atmosphere, occasionally embellished by tasteful Baroque strings. His melancholic lyrics were blended with the gorgeous, uplifting melodies and Drake's calm vocals.

▪️๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’š๐’•๐’†๐’“ ๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’“ (1970) was his most upbeat effort, featuring traces of jazz in the arrangements.
By 1970, Drake, had given up performing live entirely.

▪️Neither album sold well, and Drake, already a brooding loner, fell into serious depression that often found him unable to make music, work, or even walk and talk. He managed to produce one final full-length work, ๐‘ท๐’Š๐’๐’Œ ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’ (1972), a desolate solo acoustic album that ranks as one of the most naked and bleak statements in all of rock. He did record a few more songs before his death, but no more albums were completed, although the final sessions (along with some other fine unreleased material) surfaced on the posthumous compilation ๐‘ป๐’Š๐’Ž๐’† ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘ต๐’ ๐‘น๐’†๐’‘๐’๐’š.

▪️Drake's final couple of years were marked by increasing psychiatric difficulties, and in late 1974 he died at his parents’ home from an overdose of antidepressant medication. Whether his death was an accident or suicide has not been resolved.

▪️The 1979 release of the retrospective album ๐‘ญ๐’“๐’–๐’Š๐’• ๐‘ป๐’“๐’†๐’† allowed Drake's back catalogue to be reassessed. By the mid-1980s, Nick was being credited as an influence by such artists as Robert Smith of The Cure and Peter Buck of R.E.M. By the early 1990s, he had come to represent a certain type of "doomed romantic" musician in the UK music press and was frequently cited as an influence by artists including Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Aimee Mann, Beck, Robyn Hitchcock and The Black Crowes. Drake's first biography appeared in 1997, followed in 1998 by the documentary film A Stranger Among Us.

▪️Drake’s music continued to be discovered by new fans and performed by other singers. In the early 21st century his songs began appearing in films and television shows and commercials, bringing a new level of awareness to his music.
▪️Several biographies have been published including ๐‘๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐š ๐–๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ž (๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’), a compilation of letters, photographs, and essays collected by Nick Drake’s sister, actress ๐‘ฎ๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’“๐’Š๐’†๐’๐’๐’† ๐‘ซ๐’“๐’‚๐’Œ๐’†.

Nowadays, when Nick became fetishised, Gabrielle feels herself a guardian of her brother’s legacy trying to keep the story as true as possible.
Now it falls to her to tend Nick’s grave under the beech tree in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalene in Tanworth.

๐Ÿ“ข“We’ve just had the gravestone removed because it’s been rather badly defaced one way and another with people chipping away at it.” […] “Sometimes dead artists need to be protected from their admirers.”
It’s a beautiful book but hard to read because it includes so much hitherto private pain – not just family letters, but Rodney Drake’s diary of his son’s struggle with depression.

In March 1967 Robin was performing folk song originals and covers with a partner in a cabaret in Aix-en-Provence (France). After one show Nick Drake introduced himself and asked if Frederick would like to get together to play some songs. Among the songs she played for him was an original composition, ๐๐„๐„๐ ๐’๐Œ๐Ž๐Š๐ˆ๐๐† ๐“๐Ž ๐‹๐Ž๐๐†. It’s an easy, bluesy song that seemed to capture the feel of the times. Nick picked up music very quickly. His guitar arrangement is sophisticated and smooth. Years later, when I heard his home recording, I realized he had changed a line. “Got the marijuana blues” became “Got no other life to choose” – a fatalistic turn of phrase that strikes me as very like him“.

The song appeared on the ๐‘ป๐’Š๐’Ž๐’† ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘ต๐’ ๐‘น๐’†๐’‘๐’๐’š album as well as the 2007 ๐‘ญ๐’‚๐’Ž๐’Š๐’๐’š ๐‘ป๐’“๐’†๐’† collection of Drake's home and demo recordings. Nick Drake remains one of the most mysterious, the most ethereal artists.
“The reason why is simple: There isn’t a lot of physical evidence left that Drake was a real person. You can go to England and visit his hometown village, Tanworth-in-Arden, pay respects at his grave and stand for a picture in front of his home. But you won’t find a museum there with the laced-up shoes from the cover of Bryter Layter, or his striped poncho in a climate-controlled case. You can read his sister Gabrielle’s 2014 biography Remembered for a While, but only a handful of known photos of Nick Drake exist on the internet. There’s also not a single video of him performing live, or any footage to demonstrate his existence at all — except for one clip. Maybe.
[…] The awful quality of the clip only adds to the mystique, as a blurry man walks with his back towards the camera at an outdoor festival. That’s it. It’s only 12 seconds long, and there’s no proof it’s actually him. […] There’s … an investigation, expertly breaking down the video and pointing out why it could be him: He indeed owned the red velvet blazer the figure is wearing in the video, and Gabrielle’s biography mentions that he played the Krumlin Festival in Yorkshire in August of 1970.”
