Interview with Brian Mollko, November 2009

Eleven years ago today, on November 27th 2009, I did an ♦𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪♦ with Brian when the band played a concert in my hometown Vienna. I'm not often nervous before interviews but I think you all can understand that this time I really was.

I was in a backstage room waiting for Brian and I remember how badly I wanted to smoke a cigarette to calm down, but there was no ashtray. Then Brian came in, and guess what he brought with him – the ashtray I needed so much! We shook hands and sat down on the couch. I still know that I looked into his eyes and thought: “Wow, this is really happening right now.“

We had 20 minutes to talk. It is very important to me to act professional in my job, but in this case I knew I couldn't hide that I am extremely nervous, and so I admitted that this was not business as usual for me because I've been a Placebo fan since the very beginning. Brian put his hand on my shoulder and said: “Don’t be afraid. I won't bite you.” This broke the ice for me because I found it quite funny. We started the conversation and I have to say that Brian was very nice and politely from the beginning to the end. I started to feel comfortable with the situation, and I also had the feeling that he answered my questions honestly.

Before our time was over we smoked a cigarette together and I asked Brian for a picture. He also signed a poster and dedicated it to me. Usually I don't ask for such things because I try to separate private from job. But hey, with this beginning of the interview every bit of professionalism was lost... 😂 Anyway, I'm really grateful that I had the chance to meet Brian in person and I will never forget this special day.

The interview was printed in an Austrian newspaper, so the language in the original is German. The following translation back to English is just an excerpt.

📢 Brian Molko: “Don’t be afraid. I won't bite you! Probably.” (laughs)

📢 Brian Molko: ”Being in a band is like being in a relationship, where you develop, evolve, change, and experiment. ’Meds’ was a very dark album – we all had problems with certain drugs and we were depressed. Placebo was practically at its end as a band. ‘Battle for the sun’ in comparison is a colorful album full of energy. It should evoke hope.”

𝘽𝙕: 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙏𝙑 𝘼𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙖𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙙. 𝙄𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙖𝙢𝙚 [𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙚 15 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨, 𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙤𝙧’𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙚] 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩?
📢 Brian Molko: ”Well, there are a few people in the music business and the media sector, I call them ‘taste-makers’, who have power to make people believe what is good.
This award was given directly by the audience; therefore it is something valuable for us.”

𝘽𝙕: 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙖𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩?
📢 Brian Molko: ”My voice, it is unique. No matter which song you listen to, you will always know: this is Placebo.” (He seems extremely self-confident)

𝘽𝙕: 𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙤 𝙤𝙣 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚?
📢 Brian Molko: ”No, I haven’t felt that way in a long time. And this is a multi-tasking thing. I have to control my instrument, get the right note, communicate with my band mates and give the fans a show… there is no space for nervousness.”

𝘽𝙕: 𝙄𝙩 𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙖𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙤𝙩 𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙠 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧?
📢 Brian Molko: ”No, it’s not like that, but it is (pause) a job in the end.”

📢 Brian Molko: ”Vienna is well known as a city of art. I already have been to some museums. But please do not ask me for their names.”

📢 Brian Molko: “There's nothing to confess. I’m a totally normal guy. And in case I am not, I won't reveal it now.” (starts to grin).
