Melody Maker "Concert Review Placebo", 1996

And if there's anything better than watching Placebo take set-of-the.day by a twisted
mile,it'swatching boyswatch Placebo.
Jee-zus,how some of the distrust Brian (Who's only made up of Readiohead's Johnny
Greenwood, ThedaBara and Brett Anderson crossed with a panther, after all) like a bad smell, or one of those scary dreams about kissing a girl who, unnh, turs out to hav a dick.
Of course, maybe it's just his voice - a greedy, teasing yowl skating like a cat on butter . that gets 'em nervous.
"This is a song...." Brian begins.
"Another song in a f***ing sequaky voice, interjects a nearby fat bloke sourly. "...about a robot***. It's called Bionic, Brian concludes, deadpan, and lunges.
Fat bloke shuts the f*** up.
An Placebo careen, heels flashiing, through their sugar - and venom minefield of razorwire, bruises, cold blood, and ooh, far too much hot blood.
When Iook over, Fat Bloe is bouncing. Wait 'Til his next puzzlingly ambiguous sexy dram, I betcha.

Concert review - Placebo MTV Unplugged - London U.K. 19.08.2015

It was a wonderful show in London. Epic, unique, one of Placebo´s best concerts ever.

The MTV - Unplugged concert at 19.08.2015 in London U.K.

Laura Meneghetti from Italy was so lucky to win a ticket for this show and she sent us her concert review.

e there are some spoilers for the upcoming DVD, so be careful if you don´t wanna know too much details. If you don´t care: Enjoy!!

Placebo MTV Unplugged concert in London U.K. - 19/08/15

The event started later than scheduled and we were kept waiting outside in the cold wind, but, hey, who cares about temperature when you are about to see such a band?!
People invited by the band, Helena Berg and Cody Molko included, got inside first, of course, plus a number of people, mainly from Russia I guessed: maybe the latter belong to a Fan Club or run some specific blog on Placebo. The thing is, they were given special green bracelets allowing them backstage!
After about an hour we got in and were ordered for the hundredth time to turn off all our devices. Once inside, temperature wasn’t any higher: in fact the studio was a freezer. But, again, who cares?!given special green bracelets allowing them backstage!

The audience was asked to sit down behind a group of seats right in front of the stage: these were already taken by the band’s guests. Seats sold by Crowdsurge were on the sides and behind other reserved seats in the central stalls area.
The stage was surrounded by a transparent veil that formed a sort of giant cube. Right before the show started, we were told to shut down phones, tablets and cameras. Again..

All of a sudden, an enchanting music played by a string orchestra (6 elements, I think) invaded the silent hall and the audience experienced a sort of trance. Then, the band came up on stage and they started with Jackie. Can you believe it? Jackie! True fans had tears in their eyes and I personally had to put a hand on my mouth, as it was trying to sing it automatically even if nobody was supposed to. It was so intense. I had the feeling that all members of the audience were tense for the band, a tad more nervous than them: everybody wanted it to be a special once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Brian wore a light make-up: foundation, black eye-pencil and a some grey eye-shadow (at least this was what I could sea from where I was sitting). His clothes were elegant and minimal: black trousers and  black shirt. He had his hair trimmed, so it was a bit shorter than the last gig and he looked younger and sweeter: let’s say that the Severus Snape’s look was much less perceivable!
Stefan was impeccable as usual: his dark grey suit made his height and his slim silhouette really charming. He could have been a model! We already know his haircut (a sort of male pixiecut) seen in the previous gigs.
Matt was lightheartedly casual in his white t-shirt, while Fiona-the-busy-bee had a vintage updo that really suited her. Her half-ponytail was a bit backcombed. Very elegant.

Brian looked really relaxed, but I think he had a hurricane in his mind: he had to play, sing, entertain, do all the talking, as Stefan wouldn’t say a single word apart from “Thank you”, and get synchronised with the process of filming, which had been clearly organised before, but had to be rearranged.  Nevertheless, he was cheerful and made us laugh more than a couple of times. Post Blue was played with an instrument called the Qanun, but the very moment Stefan pulled two strings Brian went “Ha! It seems the qanun is out of tune!” He sounded so funny!!! You won’t see that in the dvd!

The coolest thing you’ll see on the dvd are the effects. I told you the band played on a stage that looked like a cage of veil. On that veil projectors created images with white lights: squares, stripes, rain drops… It was beautiful to see, but I guess it will be even more enjoyable on the DVD!
Cover moment: Where is my mind. What can I say? They have played it before and every time the emotion is almost overwhelming, but you’ll see: this time the voice is so perfect, so in tune, full, it doesn’t get lost in the open space of festival stage. It’s like it should be. They repeated it twice and they did the same for Jackie, Loud Like Love and the two songs sung with the guest artists. Brian was pretty open about having forgotten a couple of lines in LLL and Where is my mind. I think he was surprised to see how we wouldn’t mind listening to same song as many times as he wanted us to! Before playing “Where is my mind” for the second time he said “You must like the song!”. No! We like the BAND!!!!

Sweetest moments: Brian smiling at his song as he stepped on stage; Cody almost jumping on his chair during LLL.
A little thorn… I have to say it. I don’t mean to criticise the band or the way the event was managed, but the number of people in the audience was very limited and there where people from all over Europe: Italy, France, Eastern Europe, Germany. Well, you know, we bought the tickets, we caught flights, we invested in the event and it has been totally worth it, but I think half an hour of signing wouldn’t have harmed. Some people were admitted to the backstage, especially friends of the staff. I would never beg to be allowed in there nor would I sneak in, but some people with guests’ bracelets couldn’t care less, while the majority of us would have be grateful just for an autograph.

Placebo concert review Athens 8th August 2014 by Kiko from Greece

 Placebo Live-Loud Like Love Tour
Concert in Athens-8th August 2014

Concert review by Kiko from Greece in colaboration with Placebo Anyway

Well, I'm trying every day to find something deep to say. Cos I would like to find the words, that deserve to be heard -and be written in this occasion-about this magical day!

My oh my! The 8th of August shall be remembered as one of the most wonderful and memorable days of my whole life. The day that I first saw my favorite band Placebo live!

But first, let's put the facts in chronological order.

All started, in the beginning of March, when Placebo announced that they were about to come and play live in Athens during their Loud Like Love Tour.

I can remember myself jumping around the room, when I first heard the news on the radio! I would finally see Brian Molko singing my favorite songs live, here in Athens! A dream finally would come true, as even if I have been a fan for several years now and Placebo have visited our country many times, I couldn't attend any of the previous gigs. You see,  my homeland is a Greek island and me and my friends were too young to travel and attend a gig all by ourselves. But this time, I was much older and as I study here in the big city, how could I miss that again? For anything in the world!
A short after the tickets were put out in the market, I went downtown, bought my ticket with a friend and kept it in my wallet, as my most precious possession for the next 4 months. Till the 8th of August.

Pre-show Party

Moreover, another surprise was to come. A couple of days before the gig, Timo Maas, the famous Dj and close friend with Brian and Placebo as a whole, would arrived in Athens and have a Pre-Show party downtown, dedicated to Placebo on 7th of August!

Except the fact that, eventually a party with only Placebo music (every fan's dream) was held that day, we also had the opportunity to meet in person members of the band. Steve, Nick, Bill and Fiona were there, very communicative with fans and in very good spirits! The great night was the start for the great day that would followed.

Placebo live in Athens

The day had came! What every Soul Mate in this country was waiting for, finally was a matter of time to take place in the Open Air Area of the Olympic Stadium of Peace and Friendship.
Fans from all over Greece and abroad were there from the early hours of morning, even if the gates were opening at 18:00. People of all kinds and ages were gathered outside the stadium, people so different, but so simple at the same time. All of them Soul Mates. The gates opened and as the time for the show was coming more and more people were filling the beautiful and huge Open Air Area, by the sea of Piraeus.

After a long waiting full of anticipation, the lovely Greek band Sigmatropic opened the gig at 20:30. Their indie tones and poetic lyrics filled the place with beautiful melodies, but with more anticipation too. Placebo would played right after, at 22:00. Sigmatropic, finished their show at 21:30 and the proper preparations of the stage.

We were waiting the clock to reach 20:00 when at 21:50 all of a sudden the song B3 was heard, the lights on stage start blinking  and everybody knew that is the opening song of the tour. I could not believe it, when one by one the members of Placebo were coming on stage and the audience went crazy! The big moment was now reality, Brian took his microphone and with his perfect voice sent us to ecstasy.
Jumping, screaming on the top of our lungs and applauding full of joy and excitement the song finished and Brian saluted us in Greek saying "Ευχαριστώ πολύ! Γεια σου Αθήνα!" (Thank you very much! Hello Athens!).

'For what it's worth' took its place and pandemonium in the crowd. People singing, dancing, pushing forward to the rails, open bottles of water in the air, balloons had became a big maze like some kind of party. Brian was looking absolutely stunning! Following, he said: "What a beuatiful place to play! The Stadium of PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP!"  and started the  "Loud Like Love", " Allergic" followed  and the crowd went mad when the "Every you Every me" was on."Rob the bank""A Million Little Pieces" and many others came after as "Space Monkey", "One of a kind", of course "Meds"(one of Greek's favorite) and a lot more, to end the first part with  "The Bitter End". Brian didn't lose the opportunity to practice his Greek many times talking and thanking us-the audience- in the local language, as a reward to our love.

Every time we were going nuts! For us in the first rows it was party time! Sincerely, I have no idea what was going on, on the back rows but in front of the stage things were going wild as everybody in the band were giving their absolutely best and we all knew it. Steve sticking his drums frenzied, talented Nick and Bill perfect, Fiona passionate in her piano and violin and of course our lovely and awesome Stefan a star, as always. About Brian, words  are unnecessary.

In the encore the magical cover of "Running up that Hill" ,in a very more rocking version, brought back memories, likewise "Post Blue" with Brian killing it with his unique voice ,as he did with all the  previous songs, of course!
But after these two songs, sadly, we had to say goodbye and "Infra-Red" finished the gig. Placebo, in their usual bow thanked us several times, Steve and Stefan thrown some sticks and picks for the lucky ones, thanked us again and finally went backstage.

I could spend years and still I couldn't express my enthusiasm and appreciation for this day! It was no doubt ,one of the best days of my life.
I have attended many gigs the last two years, gigs of big bands that I love too, but any of them can be compared with that one!
Even if me and my friends left the Stadium totally exhausted, thirsty (sadly no water was provided from the production) and in pain due to the pressure from the huge crowd, I was so shocked, so mesmerized from Brian's voice and absolutely satisfied that even now, after so many days,

I can feel this sense of the utter happiness. Still I cannot realize that Placebo were in front of my eyes! Brian Molko, in flesh and bones, meters from me! Wow! I wish this could last much longer, but now all I wish is to see them again as soon as possible!

I didn't cry that day. These that followed however, are another story...
Thank you very much for your time and please, don't forget to be the way you are! ;-)
 ....
Special thanks to my dearest Soul Mate Aggeliki  for the pictures she provided me, as I was totally unable to take any that night.

Thank you so much Placebo Anyway! I love you guys and you are adorable! Keep doing this great work! You are sincerely one of kind!!!
