I went to London in 2004 for the very first time to attend a Placebo gig at the Wembley Arena and more than a decade later, I was back.
It’s always a pleasure to travel to this beautiful city, people are lovely and don’t judge.
The venue (the Hammersmith Apollo) is beautiful and very welcoming, not to mention the stunning architecture. The area in general is quite alive so it’s worth checking it.
The opening was served by The Mirror Trap, a Dundee based indie band.
I don’t usually pay that much attention to support bands and I didn’t know them well.
By the moment, they came on stage, I knew that they were going to be loud !
They all express themselves with such a great energy and passion so they immediately drag us into their set.
I just felt something clicked, all I can think of to describe them in a few words are : good musicality, catchy songs, relatable lyrics.
Well, what a talented band with a strong identity. Placebo sure knows how to pick them. Good luck to them, they have what it takes to make it.
Let’s now talk about the main act : Placebo was fantastic but no surprises there
You could easily say they were happy to play in their hometown. I always enjoy to attend their concerts in London because the crowd is special : there are several nationalities so it makes it stronger and louder somehow. Besides, at this point, we all know each other !
So, Fiona and the boys were at their top game. I love to watch them interact with one another.
Once the gig starts, it’s always like a ceremonial to me, I’m hypnotized and I get lost in their music. All I can do is mouth every single lyric while watching them play passionately.
I cannot stress that Placebo and their songs don’t age enough, they get better with time.
My favourite moments : a short remixed version of ‘Pure Morning’ was played as an opener, my ultimate song ‘EYEM’, when Brian introduced the band and then himself as ‘You can call me whatever the fuck you want’ and Stef & Brian with tears in their eyes at the end leaving the stage.
I need to say something about the new drummer, Matt Lunn fits quite perfectly in the band, He did made the 2008 ‘I Know’ and toured with them in 2004 with Colour of Fire after all so they’re friends. Because of his talent and his down-to-earth personality, I can just hope that he’ll become a permanent member of Placebo.
‘Loud Like Love’ was heavily present in the setlist like one could have expected, mixed with classics from their ageless catalogue. I never judge their gigs on the setlist because they usually carefully choose the songs so I just embrace it. I’d also like to add how amazed I am by all the logistics, they do have a great team.
