Placebo 20 Anniversary – Interview with
old school fan Mary Scott from Australia.
by SusanneCk – Placebo Anyway
Placebo Anyway: Mary
Scott from Australia. A special place where Placebo played this year! Now tell
us first, when did you first listen to Placebo?
Mary Scott: I first listened to Placebo in 1998, when
their Album “Without you Im Nothing” came out.
I loved “Every you Every me” was the first song that attracted my
attention! :D That was the beginning of
a love affair with Placebo!
Placebo Anyway: What
was so special about the band for you to become a fan?
Mary Scott: Their sound, the fact Brian was openly
Bisexual which I am as well. The fact his voice transported me to another time,
place, moment from the one I was in.
They still manage to do that to me even now!
Placebo Anyway: How
have you lived the last 20 years with the band and their music?
Mary Scott: Waiting for their next รกlbum to come out while
singing the previous ones songs at the top of my lungs, at any given oppurtunity!
;)
Placebo Anyway: You
have been with the band from the beginning have you gone to all the concerts in
your country? Some abroad? Do you have all their albums?
Mary Scott: I have seen them twice, in 2004 with the SWG
tour and this year at Soundwave Brisbane 22/2/14. I have all their albums from Itunes, plus
songs Brian has done with other bands and artists. I have nearly all their CDs. I did have them
all, but in moves they have disappeared and been borrowed and never returned,
so I am restocking my Album collect, and adding Vinyl to it too! :D
Placebo Anyway: You
had the pleasure to see the band this year in Brisbane! How was the concert. Any special moments?
Mary Scott: Yes, it was purely amazing! Seeing Brian come out before the band had
started (I think he was asking questions of the stage manager) and it made my
heart leap! Then the whole concert
because I was near his microphone he kept coming right to the edge of the stage
and wow! He looked at me I swear!!! Plus
the junk grabbing episode in “Black Eyed” wooo hoo is all I can say to that
one!! :D
Placebo Anyway: Do you have any special collection? Vinyls, singles,
dvd’s....?
Mary Scott: I have the deluxe box set of the lates รกlbum
Loud LIke Love, I have one DVD but am searching Ebay for another one. I have a Placebo mug, I drink my coffee out
of it every morning! :D Thats it until I have my vinyl come in that I have
ordered! I will share pics when I get it :D
Placebo Anyway: Which
song makes you feel closer to the band?
Mary Scott: Nancy boy, I just LOVE LOVE
LOVE this song, the words, the fact it was one of the first songs they sang,
its a Young Brian which makes him seem inmortal now, I cant believe hes
41. Plus I must say Exit Wounds, I have
had a relationship like that where you want the person so bad you can taste
them but its bad for you! Like a
drug. Bosco well that just has me in
floods of tears, you hear the pain in his voice, that song is very
autobiographical (sorry for the big
words!)
Placebo Anyway: Do you see any difference between the fans from the beginning
and the fans from nowadays?
Mary Scott: I guess Placebo are amazing in that they
attract people of any age, I see fans of 40-50 years old and 18 year olds! It talks to people from all walks of life and
all age groups, I guess the difference is the younger ones can jump up and down
and head bang a bit longer than older ones lol!
Placebo Anyway: Is
there a stereotypical Placebo fan? Some thing different you can see in a
typical Australian Placebo fan?
Mary Scott: Lol I think thats me! Wearing their T-shirts like a second skin,
listening to their music every day, and having Brian Molko as my phone, ipad
and computer back ground. Usually they have piercings, coloured
hair, or black hair, and eyeliner is a must! (I'm a bad fan that I dont wear it
'cos it makes my eyes sore!)
Placebo Anyway: What do you think about "Soulmates Never Die". Is
this true?
Mary Scott: AMEN! I believe this so much! I have found Placebo fans to be the kindest most
tolerant fans, I came out of a fandom that was full of jealousy competitiveness
and cruetly, Placebo fans care about each other as Brian would want it!
Placebo Anyway: In
your opinion, what unifies Placebo fans. What is the glue that puts them together?
Mary Scott: Brian Fucking Molko! (pardon me!) but its true, that man is a
genious with words and he glues us all together with them! :D
Placebo Anyway: How do you see the evolution of the band on a musical way?
Mary Scott: They have come from a
simple 3 piece band, that was naive in their sound a little, to having their
own sound, (yes you can hear their influences) but it's more a Placebo sound
now, it's evolved over time that each album even though it's slightly difference
from the last, still has their “Sound”
Placebo Anyway: Do you think the inclusion of Steve Forrest gave the band
somehting positve?
Mary Scott: He injected life back into
the band. They were unfortnately dying,
in enthusism, in their peformances, and their sound. Sometimes you need to remove one person to be
able to inject a new one that helps the band come to life again. I loved Steve Hewitt dont get me wrong! I
still love him and he was Placebo for many years. But as Brian said Placebo became a Brand not
a band. That means death usually. Steve has created the youth and excitement
again! :D I love him hes cute!
Placebo Anyway: Which difference do you see in Brian when you look back and
compare it with how he is nowadays?
Mary Scott: He was insecure, still is shy but he has way
more confidence on stage, his singing has come a long way, his stage manner has
improved. But that comes with practice
and doing this for 20 years you get damn good at it! He draws you up onto the
stage now! You are literally standing
with him in the way he makes you feel!
Placebo Anyway: In
3 seconds 3 words about Brian, Stefan and Steve!
Placebo Anyway: 20
Years to go...what is your wish for the next 20 Placebo years?
Mary Scott: More albums, MORE TOURS TO
AUSTRALIA PLEASE!!! And to be still
singing along to their songs in my car when I am 55 (OMG!) lol
Thank your for taking part
