Last
Saturday april 12th, 2014, the great British band Placebo made
their fans fall in love again during their 4th visit to Argentina.
Placebo offered a brilliant concert in Estadio Malvinas, where
not only fans but photographers, as well, were excited to watch the show.
Placebo
Anyway has the pleasure to present an interview with Guille Coluccio.
Guille,
is a showbussines photographer who collaborates with El Acople
covering shows since 2012.
By
doing so Guille is able to combine his two passions: music and
photography. Therefore any new job is for him a new challenge. The stage,
the lighting, the artist’s energy, the audience reaction all of these elements
give him the adrenaline rush he needs to get the perfect picture.
Some
of the bands he has work with include: Blur, Aerosmith, Bruce Springteen
And The E Street Band, Living Colour; Fito Paez, La Renga; Charly garcรญa; Black
Sabbath, Korn, Limp Bizkit; Paramore; Dave Mathews Band; Incubus, Ringo Star
and Placebo.

Placebo
Anyway: Apart from being big Placebo fans we have become fans
of your work, because of the beautiful pictures that you have taken during the
Placebo concert.
How was the concert for
you? What was your experience as a professional photographer covering a rock
band?
Guille
Coluccio: Placebo is a band I like very much; this is
the third concert I’ve been to here in Argentina. And all of them have been
during different creative moments of the band’s career.
As a photographer you live very intensely the minutes before the
concert, with an adrenaline rush until the show starts. When the band comes to
the stage and play the first notes then you forget that you love the band and
start thinking on how to get the best shot.
Placebo
Anyway: Did you know Brian Molko hates pictures from
the concerts? He says it is disrespectful and that the pictures get blurry
anyway.
Guille Coluccio: I
know Brian is not so keen about pictures and videos from fans; he has gotten
mad in many concerts for this reason.
Placebo was one of the hardest bands to take live pictures that I have
had in my career because of the short time (you can only take pictures during
one song) and the lighting during those songs.
Placebo
Anyway: What are your thoughts about this new era of fans
taking pictures and filming during the whole concert, instead of enjoying the
concert and maybe disconnected from technology and let themselves go with the
music?
Guille Coluccio: It’s something very different from what I was used to 20 years
ago, sometimes I am part of the audience as well, I have been going to gigs
since I was very little, I’m from the time where you would turn lighters on
during slow songs.
Everybody wants to immortalize their admiration with amateur pictures
and videos, and I think it’s a positive way to express yourself and remember
the concert. I don’t see it as a bad thing.
Placebo
Anyway: What do you think that it could be done to avoid this new photography
obsession?
Guille Coluccio: Digital photography is
here to stay, it is very hard to go back, nowadays cameras are getting smaller,
and some professional cameras are pocket sized.
The bands will decide whether or not to set limits.
Placebo
Anyway: What do you think is the most important thing for a professional photographer
in order to take the perfect picture? Which were the most memorable moments for
you during the Placebo concert?
Guille Coluccio: The most important thing
is to be aware of the energy of the concert, not just the musician. You
have to be aware of the audience, the height of the stage, lighting, the
scenography, and you need to watch closely all of these details to be sure of
the picture you’re looking for.
The pictures were taken during Loud Like Love, the third song from the
set list they played in Buenos Aires, the idea was to take pictures of Brian
singing and playing the guitar, as well as pictures of Stefan and Steve,
without neglecting the rest of the band. It was a really short time to take
pictures of a band but as a photographer I need to be flexible, and work under
any circumstances I get, to get the shots and make the best I can.
Placebo
Anyway: Do you study the band a bit before the show or, do you just let your emotions
take over?
Guille Coluccio: I study the band, watching
live videos, but I also like to be amazed during the show. I consider myself a
music-lover (laughs).
Placebo
Anyway: Do you think Brian is photogenic?
Guille Coluccio: I think Brian is a very
photogenic artist, the scenography with videos and the lighting of this tour is
one of the best I’ve seen in the last few years and it could produce really
interesting pictures of the band, and especially of Molko.
Sadly as a photographer I could only take pictures during one song, I
would have like to be able to capture more moments of each song, the
interaction with the audience and the backlighting that the videos produce.
Placebo
Anyway: If you could work again With Placebo especially with Brian Molko what kind of
photo-shoot would you like to have an acoustic concert, during the filming of a
video, an interview?
Guille Coluccio: I would like to join the
band on tour, taking road pictures, without them knowing. As for the shots, I
would like them to be different moments of the tour. And as for Brian I would
like to take pictures of him during an acoustic concert.
Placebo
Anyway: We would like to congratulate you again on your work and thank you for the
interview. How can people get in contact with you?
Guille Coluccio: To see my work: you can

all your future projects and we hope to be able to work with you again in the
future. Hugs!
